ex-USMC_Hornet_WSO
Hi! I'm just getting into ship modeling and am trying to figure out the right paints to buy for WWII USN ships. After some research, I've found that the Navy standard colors were Ocean Gray (5-O), Navy Blue (5-N), Haze Gray (5-H), Sea Blue (5-S), Light Gray (5-L), and Deck Blue (20-B). I'd prefer to go with Gunze Mr Color, but will consider other brands if there isn't a good Mr Color equivalent. Can anyone recommend the best Mr Color matches? Also, I see that Testors Model Master has these specific colors in their line (5-O is their No. 2157 for example). Are these good matches? Thanks!
Grey Ghost 531
White Ensign Colourcoats is another option. They spray really well. https://www.hbhobbies.com/collections/us-navy Edited August 11, 2017 by Grey Ghost
dnl42
Completely agree with Grey Ghost 531! White Ensign Models started their Colourcoats line for Naval colors. As you can see by the above link, they have the colors you need under the names you're looking for.
ex-USMC_Hornet_WSO
Ok. I bought the Colourcoats, but man, were they expensive! I understand that Colourcoat paints have been discontinued. Is that true? Are the Model Master equivalents sold on scalehobbyist.com accurate? Thanks.
Grey Ghost 531
I believe they were discontinued and then the line was restarted in its current format. They work very well. I haven't compared the colors to Model Master's but the Colourcoats I've used have sprayed better and covered better than the other Model Master colors I've used. Grey Ghost 531
I do all the time. It's the only thing that seems to get Model Master matt black to behave in my airbrush. Anything else seems to come out grainy. It does mean you can't touch what you painted for about a day, it takes it a long time to harden.
ex-USMC_Hornet_WSO
Ok. Good to know. Thanks for the tip, Grey Ghost!
