A-7E Corsair II - Hasegawa 1/48 (Twin build - Completed)

Recommended Posts

Fantastic weathering.  I like that you took the time to weather those bombs, very few people catch this.   Nothing looks worse (IMO) than a bunch of glossy, immaculate bombs on a combat aircraft.

Keep up the good work!

A bit of a nightmare attaching them to the wings : (    Still have to squeeze in the fuel tank pylon in there, which I'll be attaching empty.

Things are progressing nicely. She looks good all loaded up. This will be quite an impressive display when completed.

Oh man, both are awesome. The weathering is... juicy! 🙂

Btw if you attach/display it like that - I should say that it is a pretty ellegant solution!

The last of the Mojicans  : )   Got the final set of ordnance wrapped up for Corsair No. 2...what a relief to get all of that bomb-work done!

Tried correcting that wonky one but other parts kept getting knocked off so I just left it alone.

Thanks for the kind words, Ichitoe! : )

Worked on the fuel tank pylons.   I won't be attaching the fuel tanks to keep to the maximum payload of 15,000 lbs.  The swaybars will be a little more visible for the Corsair flying at a steep bank so I detailed them a little.

The bolts on the swaybars have those footpads that hold against the surface of the fuel tank.   I used to cut up some disks using a punch but they end up looking like hockey pucks instead of having a slightly conical shape.   So I tried to make better footpads...

48928663848_92d9862ba9_h.jpg

I would first drill out a 0.5mm hole at the end of the rod.

48928577903_533d2a28fd_h.jpg

Then turn the rod against a cutter blade held at an angle.

48929115836_1543e64814_h.jpg

And slice off a "footpad"  : )

48928577068_c130183a64_h.jpg

I would thread  a 0.5mm rod through it.

48928663413_eb2e0c91f3_h.jpg

I cut up those curved swaybar parts from 0.5 x 1mm strip styrene, sanded to shape and threaded the bolts through.

48929303652_d8d6756288_h.jpg

For the nuts I just sliced up some tiny discs.

I think they look a little better than the swaybars that came in with the kit.

Thanks, A-10Loader!  Hi Falconxlvi, really glad you like it so far! : )

Did some further shaping of the swaybraces...

48956448763_c16e4b6fde_h.jpg

48957189827_e2ddb3e017_h.jpg

Created the openings on the underside.  Really wanted to carve out the openings but not so sure how I'd go about it, so I just painted the openings on.

48956447803_cf460fc543_h.jpg

Detailed the innards a little using some cut up strips of 0.13mm sheet styrene.

48956448308_2ede8b9f76_h.jpg

The opening was too stark a dark color so I faded it a little to make it look a little more realistic.

Excellent detailing! Your patience really pays off.

I've built the same A-7E from Hasegawa of VA-15 (see my posts in Display section) but was not that far in detailing as you did, great job!

Working on the the last set of swaybars...

The conical footpads are the hardest to shape as the rod "wags" on the dremel while you turn but they still look pretty good once you slip them onto the rods.

48990123046_98932a64ad_h.jpg

The nuts are easier to shape.   Just sliced flat discs to slip on and you're done.

Hi AFM, Aigore, thanks guys! : )

Worked on the various protrusions:

49089316736_5b98910288_h.jpg

Re-shaped two pitot tubes by sanding the ends.   These A-7s at that time had only one pitot tube on the port side.   Also made some base plates.

49089316936_84fddaf2e7_h.jpg

49089524542_407baf6a55_h.jpg

Will have to flatten the sheen.

49089326381_84cfc2f831_h.jpg

Cut up some styrene bits for the angle-of-attack probes as the kit didn't have any.

Steve, John, Pete, thanks for the kind comments.  Really appreciate it  : )

Ok ready to mount the lights, pitot tubes, antennae and other stuff that launch into the ether and vanish.  Hope I don't lose any.

Pulled it off with losing any : )    The cannons on these Corsairs didn't have those bare-metal panels so I just needed to paint on the gun blast marks.

The canopies don't sit perfectly but I'm fine with that.    I once did the mistake of gluing on my Hasegawa Tomcat canopies, found some specks of dust inside the next day and couldn't do anything about them.   So lesson learned -- no more glued-on canopies for me.  My only regret is that I should have painted them along with the fuselage in one go so they'll have the same color.   I don't understand why they're in another shade when it's the same brand of paint.  And I believe the same bottle?

All in all I think I'm good with these Corsairs.   I couldn't find the pilot's names -- I'll print those someday -- just can't tell when that'll be so I'll  take some shots for now and off they go to the Display Case section : )
