Dutch
Does anyone know what paint scheme was worn by USMC KC-130T 165000 of VMGR-452 when it crashed on 10 July 2017? I have searched the web for USMC KC-130T photos of VMGR-452 and have found a few since 2013 in a new overall glossy lt gray with all black markings. So, I was wondering if 165000 was still in the old three color TPS scheme or the new lt gray color scheme? I want to build a tribute bird. DonSS3
I think the first photo shows at least a two-color scheme, so it's possible that it's the standard TPS scheme.
Dutch
Don, Here is another photo of 165352. It is almost assuredly a single color scheme. As far as I can tell, it is the only USMC KC-130F/R/T/J painted in this scheme, all others are still in the standard TPS scheme, with two notable exceptions for the VMGR-252 & -352 black tail birds.. Trojan Thunder
The last photo on Airliners.net dated April 2016 shows the 165000 in the TPS scheme. Looking at crash photos you can see the lighter lower colour on the ramp and going slightly up the side of the fuselage before the next darker colour starts.
Dutch
Thanks, Ray, as I suspected. I will have a much more difficult time sourcing decals now. Unless, MAW, Fighting Leathernecks or Caracal releases a 1/144 KC-130 TPS decal. This one will move to back burner for now.
RedCrown
I believe that Dave Roof is making decals for this aircraft, according to his post on Facebook.

Dutch
I am going to paint and decal my KC-130T model project in the Navy TPS scheme using MIL-STD-2161B, page 102 & 103. This reference clearly denotes Federal Standard colors and markings (font, color, size and general location). As there is no specific aftermarket decal for a USMC KC-130 in TPS markings, I will have to piecemeal the markings. I plan on using Microscale / Superscale 72-274 for the US insignia; Scale-Master SM-35 for the medium gray (FS36237) titles, codes and numbers; and SM-15 for the black (FS37038) numbers on the nose. However, I still need the dark compass ghost gray (FS36320) title (MARINES x1), codes (NY x2), and numbers (000 x2) for the upper wing. The Mil-Std calls for 30" for all wing markings. To size it for 1/144 scale, that would be 15" on a 1/72 scale decal sheet. I think the "New" Microscale sheet AC72-0019 will work for the "Marines" title and the "NY" code (from NAVY). Does anyone know of any appropriately sized number sheets in FS36320? Microscale's AC72-0018 only has 24" & 36" letters and numbers. R/ Dutch Not 100% sure how they'll look, but I can cut you a set of vinyl masks so you can paint the markings on. Give me a day or two after Easter and I'll scale down and cut markings from the 72nd sheet.
