Bob Beary
I posted this over on the armor section, but there seems to be little action over there, so I'll ask here as well. I want to try doing a dot filter process...applying small dots of oil paint and then dragging them down the side on the tank. My question is should it be done on a glossy or flat surface? Thanks, Bob Edited October 4, 2017 by Bob Beary
Janissary
In my experience, semi-gloss / satin is the way to go. Too much gloss the filter doesn't stick. Too flat stains the paint in undesirable ways. Satin gives you the best control.

Janissary
Thank you, I hope it works well. I also wanted to add that if you are shooting for a semi-gloss surface for filters, I would tend to stay on the slightly flatter side of that middle road (if it makes sense). The first few layers of the oils in the filter typically contribute to glossiness, especially if you rub them clean with with a cotton tshirt or something to fix the mistakes, so with oils/filters, the surface tends to get progressively glossier.
