Cessna CH-1 / YH-41 "Seneca"

Recommended Posts

I recently saw an old Adams kit of the Cessna CH-1/YH-41 Seneca as an aerial missile transporter (below).  Has anyone seen this kit and any idea what scale it was?  I know most of the Adams kits were box-scale, meaning that they were made to fit into a standard-sized box, not really a standard scale.  Just curious though as this would be a cool model to build.

In a later boxing by Life-Like, it was shown as a 1/40 kit.  Any idea how accurate that is?

Unicraft do a resin kit in 1/72 scale.

These kits need a lot of elbow grease bu they are build-able.

Jack Zimmermann was the test pilot for this helicopter.

If you do a Google search under Cessna CH-1, you'll get lots of hits with information.

There is also a very good history of the type in Thompson's Cessna Wings for the World  Volume One "The Single engine development story" (the first in the excellent 3 book series by a former Cessna engineer and test pilot which details post-war Cessna types).

There used to be...and perhaps still is...a model kit history/manufacturer desk model history site that was heavy on helicopters that had pages of info on the type including old sales brochures.

The type got it's best exposure at the Seattle World's Fair in 1962, it was the type used by a local flying service to give sightseeing rides from the park at the Space Needle.

Looking at the old photos, the fuselage was far larger than the typical Cessna SE fuselage of the day...very wide, close to 5 feet. I guess it would be more like a 182 than a 172.
