There are other ways to do that- cons, fuel dumping, etc.

I have a feeling it was a Navy pilot but in a civilian aircraft. that looks like airshow smoke to me...

No smoke generator or sky-writing equipment required.  They just got lucky with a relatively low, stable contrails level and low winds aloft.  Allowed their flight track to visibly hang around for a while, preserving their "art."
