New equipment for US Army Apaches

Recommended Posts

Looks like deployed Apaches are now sporting LAIRCM rigs.   Wonder if these are also being fitted to the Blackhawks and Chinooks in theater?  Surprised that we haven't seen these on MH-60;s yet, though the SOAR folks aways got the high tech gear first?

Anyway, just another item to add to the wishlist for aftermarket attention.

Found this article that has some great info / pics of Iraq deployed helos.

Answered my question about whether Chinooks were fitted with LAIRCM (yes).    Given this, I would assume that deployed Blackhawks also have this fitted, be very curious to see what the installation looks like on those helos.

Mike,

Are you looking for the 'E' model Apache in 1/48th, Sealmodel has them in stock

Greg

Hey Greg,

I am, I have never ordered from Seal before, where are they?  And are they pretty reputable?

-64's are just NOW being equipped with these? Sheesh, figures, way to go Army...

Don't think it's any reflection on the Army.  To date, these things have pretty much only been installed on larger helos (Chinooks, 53's, MV-22's, etc).

I'm guessing the smaller the airframe, the more involved the installation is (both due to the weight and space constraints).  That's why I was curious if they have these on Blackhawks.   Seems like a pretty densely packed airframe already.

Don't believe any other 64's operated by Israel, UK, etc have anything similar installed.  Same applies to the Marine's attack helo.

Those Chinooks are flying with ATIRCM.  Those AH-64E's have ATW.

ATW?  Never heard of it.   Thought the article said the Apaches were flying with DON (Dept of Navy) LAIRCM....

Advanced Threat Warner (ATW) is the sensor upgrade to DON LAIRCM.  It has missile warning, laser warning, and hostile fire in the same form/fit as the previous sensor.  Most DON LAIRCM and some LAIRCM platforms are being upgraded to ATW.

Here is a NGC data sheet NGC ATW

A somewhat recent article, although there are some errors in how it describes functionality https://defensesystems.com/articles/2017/05/11/helosurv.aspx

Looks like the new gear still has some issues that need to be resolved (hopefully sooner, rather than later).

Question - if you look at the first picture in the linked article, you'll see a rectangular panel scabbed onto the forward section of the tail boom.   Never noted this before, is it a new addition and if so, any idea what it is?  Also looks like the mounts for the flare buckets have changed.  Thought they used the same type as the Blackhawk, just an exposed metal frame?
