Niels
Just stumbled upon this pic; http://www.airfighters.com/photo/202500/M/USA-Navy/Boeing-F-A-18F-Super-Hornet/166878/ and was wondering if anyone knows the story behind it?
Niels
Seems the same applies to NG111 Bu.no. 166852 from VFA-41? http://www.airfighters.com/photo/202499/M/USA-Navy/Boeing-F-A-18F-Super-Hornet/166852/
Pieter
Sometimes you need spare parts and they are not there... so you have to cannibalize other planes :-(
habu2
Preparing to ship them to Canada...
BoeingDriver
Looks like those were shipped in a C-5 to/form somewhere.
dnl42
Maybe they watched a little too much of The Martian?
Geoff M
Canada not getting new Super Hornets. Todays (12/9/17) Wall Street Journal reports Canada is not buying Hornets due to Boeing protesting Bombardier sales in the USA. They are considering used f-18's from Australia. tosouthern66
Maybe they shipped them to get refitted/upgraded for the advanced super hornets program?
Niels
Has that programme started? Interesting to see the lifting slings on the first one too
tosouthern66
I don't know if they have started the upgrade program or not. I heard that they were going to take some of the current F/A-18F Hornets and retrofit the Advanced Hornet parts onto them. Just don't know the time frame?

The presence of sling mounting hardware would seem to contradict that option? And why remove engines and vertical control surfaces (but not entire vertical stabs) for air transport? Not being argumentative, just deducing options from photos....
Niels
Being used for spare parts seems most likely, although the removal of all flying surfaces makes this seem strange too?
tosouthern66
I read that they are going to start in April 2018 on the Service Life Modification program. Which could include the Advanced Super Hornet upgrades. I guess it's a wait and see\ thing now.

Skull Leader
that's what happens when you park your jet in a rough neighborhood.
Spook498
The info I found was that both birds are there with In Service Repairs. The 41 bird had fire damage of an unspecified nature, and the 154 bird did not list a reason. However, the 154 bird has since had its information transferred over, and is being carried, by 122. f5guy
They might be being used for spare parts for NSAWC (or NAWDC as NSAWC is called now). NAWDC has several F-18Fs in the unit. When NSAWC used to have their F-14s there were several Tomcat hulks out on the ramp that they were pulling parts off of. That might be what's going on with these two Super Hornets. That being said, they might be waiting on parts too. In the past I've seen several VFC-13 F-5Es looking like these two Hornets. You'd swear that they'd never fly again, and then the next time that I went back they'd be up and flying! Either of these scenario's would be my guess. FWIW, Fred K. Niels
Probably just preservation measures. 166878 is currently listed as "stored" without any unit connection.
