Stars and bars on F-86E wing

Recommended Posts

It was brought to my attention that the drop tanks on F-86E Sabres in

the Korean War were 99 inches off the center line of the fuselage, on

station 99. I am working on a 1/72 Hobbycraft F-86E and the tanks are

about 116 inches off center of fuselage. I changed the dimensions to

mm for ease of measuring, so in 1/72 scale the tanks are 70mm center to

center or 35mm(99 inches in real scale full size) center of fuselage to center

of tank. What I am getting at is the star and USAF would be cut differently than

my instructions show. With the tanks at station the star doesn't get cut at all,

it misses the pylon, and the USAF gets cut between the U and S and not the

S and A as I had done before. Here's a picture of my Hobbycraft with the pylons

at 70 mm and my 1/72 Airfix with the pylons at about 80 mm. From what I see

Airfix and Hobbycraft have the pylons in the wrong place so the decals are covered

where they shouldn't be, the star shouldn't be under the pylon at all. Is my assumption

right, all the 1/72 F-86s I have built for years have been wrong?---John

Thanks for the information about station 99. All these years and all the sites I

have gone to and NOBODY has ever said a thing about the drop tanks being on

the wrong location. I have seen the proof in LOTSA pictures. Guess no one cares.---John

photo proof that Mig Poison started out with the old slatted wing :)  do you have a photo of it with the 6-3 hard wing??

the pylons did not get 'moved' for the FB version, they were still on sta 99

In fact it was a leading edge change, not a whole new wing for the 6-3 mod
