Hasegawa 1/48 F6F-5 Hellcat

Recommended Posts

Just finished this today. It's Hasegawa's 1/48 Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat finished in Mr Color 71 and with the kit decals. The cowling is by DMold and the wheels are True Details - sadly they solidly stuck in position before I could rotate them so the flats are correctly orientated. I also lost a pylon stub during polishing. More details at https://jonbryon.com/hasegawa-1-48-grumman-f6f-5-hellcat/.

Thanks for looking

Jon

Amazingly smooth gloss finish. How did you do it?

It's Gunze GX100 sprayed on fairly heavy with an Iwata RG-3. I then cut it down with Micromesh 2400 and 3200 followed by polishing with Tamiya Coarse and Fine compounds with a cotton pad. It's not a perfect finish by any means - I did not use the Finish compound and I did not get rid off all the orange peel. I also decided to go for a gloss finish late in the build, so could not sand and polish around some of the surface detail or protruding parts (like the rocket pylons). But then it's not mean to be a car showroom sort of finish!

Cheers

Jon
