gibo2016
Hello guys. I'm thinking of getting this kit. I'm interested in the markings of 85-0100. s-l1600 by timothy33csa, on Flickr As you can see Academy depicts it with 2 kill markings. I've seen another kit which shares the same markings. GBH IIRC correctly. Anyway I want to know if 85-0100 really did wear those 2 kill markins at one point. Only pics I can find in the net doesn't show it does 84908_1515231611 by timothy33csa, on Flickr Decals of the ACADEMY KIT. I could also opt for the other Oregon marking aca_12531_decals by timothy33csa, on Flickr Edited February 18, 2018 by gibo2016
mrvark
84-014 is the jet with two kills, not 85-100. CORRECTION: 014 was initially thought to have scored a kill on 26 Apr 99 on a MiG-29. This was later corrected and the kill was credited to 86-0156, its second kill of that sortie. jmel
I've shot 85-0100 at Portland a few times and it does not have two kill stars. It is not a MiG killer. Jake
ORANGF15Guy
If you google Captain Jeff 'Claw' Hwang and look under images, you will see the aircraft with two MiG kill stars. My understanding is that the Air Guard put them on the aircraft for Capt Hwang's fini flight prior to retirement, then they were removed. Great Wall Models did a special edition F-15C for this aircraft. Claw was credited with two MiG 29 kills. Hope this was helpful
airmechaja
The line jet at Lakenheath that Hwang was in and got 2 kills was 86156 or did I build the wrong GWH kit?

No not at all.....the PANG painted his two kills on the jet that he was taking his fini flight in. My understanding is that they were removed right after. They were recognizing his accomplishment before he retired! I believe you are 100% correct in saying that 156 was the actual aircraft that splashed the two MiG-29's Edited February 18, 2018 by ORANGF15Guy
airmechaja
Well, my research showed that line jet had 2 green stars painted on the forward fuselage.
gibo2016
Thanks gents. I guess 85-0100 is out of the question now. I would be doing 78-0473 instead

airmechaja
A line jet is a everyday plane not assigned to anyone in particular. Hwang was assigned to 0156 for the sortie that day.
gibo2016
Oh I see. Well I guess that settles it then. 85-0100 never had 2 kill markings at any time and no F-15 bearing the redhawk tailart with the number AF 85 - 100 wore those kill markings ever
airmechaja
Just to clarify, 0100 did have the 2 green stars on it but it was just to signify Hwang's 2 kills for ceremony only. The plane itself was not a "Mig Killer". Hope that makes sense.

I just googled Hwang + Fini flight and poof there she is. 85-0100 in the flesh with 2 kill marks.

gary1701
Gents, Just came across this thread. 493rd FS F-15C 86-0156 at Lakenheath usually shows two Mig-29 stars from Serbia, 1999; Although like some of the other 493rd jets, they do have a habit of vanishing sometimes before being reapplied. '0156 was originally only credited (and marked) with the one kill, the second was then added sometime later. Also they were originally Serbian flags before the 493rd went over to green stars. 84-0014 did originally carry the second kill (alongside it's Iraqi kill) but was changed at some point fairly soon after 1999, and a few years ago the jet did leave the 493rd to go to the Californian ANG. aaronj326
85-0100 did have two stars on it from September to November 2014. These were placed on the jet for Col Jeff Hwang’s fini flight to recognize his MiG kills in 1999. The aircraft he got the kills in, 86-0156, was also recognized on the side of 85-0100. I have photos of the stars on 85-0100 but the picture is too big to upload here. Anyone that would like closeups of them can email me at aaronj326@hotmail.com.
aaronj326
To add more to the significance of these two kills, Captain Hwang had two MiG-29’s coming at him. He pickled two AiM-120’s off and one tracked to each of the MiG’s, taking them both out. It is the only time in the history of air warfare that one pilot scored two kills in a single engagement. Many other pilots have scored two or more kills on a single mission, but each of the kills were scored on separate engagements within that mission. Only Captain Hwang has scored two kills during one engagement, ever.
