Dave1089
Hi guys, I'm getting parts together to build a 1/35 Pave Hawk from the 2010 onward period in Afghanistan. Would anyone have, or know of, any detailed pictures of the airframe, particularly the interior/layout of medical gear, personal weapons etc? Thanks in advance Dave Edited February 21, 2018 by Dave1089
Clinstone
From 2010-2014 the HH-60s would have been configured fairly similar. There may be small differences between the Bagram and Kandahar/Bastion aircraft due to the power constraints found in the higher altitudes but their gear setup would have been similar. This image is of a Bastion-based PEDRO in 2011. Most of everything to the right of the photo is PJ medical gear, and everything to the left is aircrew gear. Due to the preponderance of FOBs there are no internal auxiliary fuel tanks. The cabin space is filled with medical gear. Floor armor is installed and the FRIES bars are removed. The aircraft armament would almost always be GAU-18s. Additionally the chaff buckets would be removed to save weight because there was no radar threat in Afghanistan. There were GAU-2s carried by some ANG/AFRES birds in late 2009 but by 2010 almost all of the aircraft were employing the GAU-18. After 2014 most of the FOBs started to close and the PEDROs reinstalled the auxiliary fuel tanks. The 200-gallon was the most common but dual-185's or a single 185-gallon tank would not be out of place depending on unit preferences. Floor armor is still installed and FRIES are still removed. PJ medical gear was scaled back as well due to the shift in mission set from CASEVAC back to CSAR. In both cases the aircrew would be flying with an HGU-56 and Eagle CIRACs vest in mulitcam. 2011 saw the shift to the A2CU two-piece flight suit from the normal one-piece desert flight suit. Aircrew weapons would be M4s with EOTECH or M68 sights. Most aircrew had PEQ-15s installed. Other than that, like all modeling, find a reference and go with it. With the amount of change that occurred during the OEF surge, anything in between these configurations would be correct. Edited February 22, 2018 by Clinstone
Dave1089
That's great info, thanks for that mate. The spineboard on the roof is a cool touch to add to the model. I've a set of Live Resin's GAU-18 and external mounts on the way along with some other bits and pieces. Were the cockpit doors removed as per crew choice or was it the norm during the summer months? Clinstone
Doors were removed almost year-round in the south due to the significant brownouts. Bagram was significantly colder and doors would be removed in the summer when density altitude, weight, and crew comfort were a factor. Edit to add: the cables across the cabin in the first photo is part of the CORS or Crew Overhead Restraint System. It is no longer installed on the HH-60G. hawkwrench
What would the stateside helos be configured like? The same??? Tim
Clinstone
Stateside they would have no floor armor, FRIES bar installed, dual 185-gallon tanks, chaff buckets, and usually have the cockpit doors installed. Weapons would be either GAU-2s or GAU-18s depending on the training needed. The PJs normally only carrying their packs with them on training missions.
hawkwrench
Still the normal med gear and board? Tim
Clinstone
No. Most training missions do not have PJs on board and outside of spinup training the PJs won’t have any med gear with the exception of a medical rucksack.
hawkwrench
What about deployed to Alaska for training? Med stuff and PJ's then? Tim
Clinstone
I’m not 100% sure about the Alaska birds since they have a home station alert mission. Their alert birds may have med gear but their normal line birds wouldn’t. If your looking at Alaska specifically they won’t have chaff or flare buckets installed. Clinstone
One final addition, if you're going to be replicating an ANG/AFRES aircraft they most likely will have the noise insulation installed forward of the cabin doors. For some reason most of their aircraft have it installed. As always, find a good source picture but from what I have seen it is more often then not installed.
Dave1089
Great info, thanks. I'll now need to work out how to add the floor armour! Edited February 24, 2018 by Dave1089
