F-4 White Stencil Decal

Recommended Posts

I’m narrowing my markings choices down for my ZM F-4D. I’m leaning toward Ritchie’s former 463 when it was assigned to the 18 TFW at Kadena with “ZZ” tail codes. At the time it carried those codes it had white and black stenciling. I thought stencilling would be easy to track down but it ain’t. The kit sheet has all black and I can’t find white after searching til I’m cross eyed. Any ideas?

There was once a Microscale sheet for white stencils but it is very hard to find. I used it 20+ years ago on a Phantom FGR.2 and I haven't seen that sheet since. I don't know of any others. It would be nice if someone like Furball were to do a set like their F-4B stencils.

even if they are designed for f-4E , icarus makes a white stencil decal sheet, most should be usable. and are easily available . like at the48ers.com

(i have no share in that business, just a very satisfied customer)

Some more readily available options...

Microscale (new edition) http://www.microscale.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Session_ID=cd9c9c19fd4c4de38e26eb99724cdab6&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=AC48-0052&Store_Code=MD&search=Phantom+data&offset=&filter_cat=&PowerSearch_Begin_Only=&sort=&range_low=&range_high=

Warbird Decals http://store.spruebrothers.com/product_p/wbd480

Unlike the old Microscale offerings, the Icarus sheets and the hard to find Afterburner Decals Phantom stencils, the products referenced above do not  include the tiny “panel numbers.”

While on the topic of white stencils and after market sheets for the F-4, I'm wondering if anyone can help me ID a scheme from a description?

Years and years back, the first time I visited the local hobby show (must be nearly two decades ago now), one of the most memorable models of the entire show was an 1/48 long-nose Phantom (I'm pretty sure it was a Hasegawa F-4G), in of the "camo on top, white belly" schemes, which was absolutely covered in stencils. The thing that really stands out most in my mind is a circle of words, in white, on the top of the nose between the windscreen and radome. It may have been an anniversary of some sort, no idea.

Anyway, since this model was pretty much the one that awoke my interest in the type, I've been thinking that when I finally get my hands on an F-4G kit, this might be a good scheme to display it in. Now I just need to ID it.. Can anyone help?

Thank you kindly, @mingwin!

Sad to hear that the bird itself is gone, though Joe Baugher's USAF serials list tells me the crew made it out safely at least.

Does anyone make a sheet for this bird in 1/72?

I think HobbyDecal might be out of business, but their web site is still up and the order function is still active. If you decide to use them, order from Sprue Brothers.

I had forgotten about Icarus' stencils. I have a sheet of their black ones right here in front of me!

Thanks guys for all of your ideas. We really do need a “new school” set of stencils for c/d jets. There probably could be some offerings for post vietnam era airplanes as well aside from reserve and ang. There are some interesting markings for tac, pacaf and usafe that have been overlooked.

Agreed. I've been hoping Furball would follow their F-4B/N stencils with some others. I've been campaigning for some more 4th TFW F-4D and E decals, and there are also a lot of ANG and USAF F-4 subjects that have been neglected.

For the truly brave, Testors included the City of Victorville markings in their 1/48th F-4F/F-4G kit.

Also, here's Roger Jackson's F-4D build on MM, where he hits the stencilling challenge very well. Very clean build, along with great writing. Enjoy;

Not to take away from Jake's upcoming release, but many old Microscale F-4 sheets (examples 48-147 & -148) include extensive stencil markings, some sheets in white, some in black.  However their placement instruction sheet sucks big time, to the point it's mostly unreadable.  Having said that I'm sure a new sheet printed with current technology would be preferable to the old Microscale sheets.
