I'm considering obtaining a Heller 1/72 Corsair F4u-1 so that I can build a shelf model with the wings folded (it will have lots of company).  I infer that while the outer wing panels are separate, Heller offers nothing in the way of parts or instructions to building the model with the wings folded.

So,  had anyone done this?  I'd love some comments, advice, warnings.

Thanks very much.

Hello Peter,

Just gotta love the Corsair! There`s not much available for the F4U as far as wing folds go in 1:72 scale. I`ve been lucky enough to obtain an old Hasegawa limited edition kit with resin parts for wing folds. These are  pretty scarce nowadays but not impossible to find. I remember noticing the resin parts were made by KMC (usa) I`m not seeing the kit on scalemates and no luck online. There is a french company who makes a resin wing fold set for the Tamiya kit, but i don`t know how much money you wish to throw into this pot.

For your best bet...how about acquiring some plans/instructions from a Tamiya 1:48 F4U kit and make a scratchbuilt wing fold mechanism. Many folks follow this path ;-)

It would seem the 1976 Heller mould indeed has the folded wings as an option. I was not aware of this. The more recent Heller F4Us have another mould.

Maybe this is the Airfix mould. And maybe...you already knew all this, lol.

Did me a favor - - - the one I thought of buying was the one with the fixed wings.  I would have been right vexed if I bought it...Thanks!

Well on the flipside Peter, had it not been for your thread i would not have discovered the french MUST HAVE wing fold set for the 1:72 scale Tamiya kit.

I`m pretty stoked about finding out about that one. So i guess that makes us even, hahaha.  :beer4:
