Might that part have been oily from handling? Did you see any difference in appearance or sheen while you were airbrushing the clearcoat?

Was the base coat allowed to completely dry for at least 24 hours?  Sometimes Gunze Aqueous base color coats remain tacky for several days, based on my own experience.

That would make sense, as it was over 24-48 hours but not much more.  It was only select areas that were affected, and all pieces were prepped the same way.  I’ll give them a week to dry and see if that helps.  Thanks!

This explains a lot. Mr Hobby Super Clear is lacquer based while the Aqueous paint you used is water based. Lacquer based paints are “hotter” than water based ones and will react with them.

 

Best to use a water based clear coat. Mr Hobby has one in a can called Topcoat.
