john53
I am now able to restart this project too. I was missing the slats but just found a kit that has the slats as extras, Hobbycraft kit 1361 is a hard edge F-86F but for some reason they left the slats on the sprue. I wanted to do a hard edged Sabre and this kills 2 birds with one stone so to speak. I am almost ready to paint this, I was going to use the Hobbycraft Golden Hawk kit decals but it is looking so good I may get a better set. I scratch built the scoops on the fuselage by the wing trailing edge.---John Edited July 12, 2018 by john53 grammar error
john53
There is one other small problem I had. The kit has the drop tanks in the wrong location. I was informed by a rather smart modeler, from Canada, that all Sabres, Canadair and North American have their drop tanks at station 99, which means they are 99 inches from the fuselage center line to the center line of the wing pylon which holds the drop tank. He told me ALL model companies made the same mistake with the exception of Revell's F-86D, according to him it's the only kit of an F-86 with the drop tanks in the correct location. Just a little tid bit you may want to check out. The "inner" pencil lines in the photo above are where I redrilled for that correct dimension.---John
john53
My Hobbycraft kit came in, F-86F-25/30. It is a hard wing with a wing fence but HC left the slats on the sprue, so I can use the slats for the missing ones on my Sabre 6 Golden Hawks. Also HC has the correct decals for The Huff! It has the 2 little characters and the Miss Jenny that go on the right side, also the dragon on the left side has the right colors! I did the Airfix new F-86 and the colors were off and no right hand side decals, I'll save these and do The Huff again someday.Looks like HC came through big times for me. Now to mask the wing for the silver and also do the slats.---John
john53
Slats sprayed Tamiya silverleaf, I placed them on the wing for a test fit, need to straighten them slightly, very minor bow. Time to order the gold paint.---John Edited May 5, 2018 by john53
stevehnz
Coming on very nicely John, I'll be keen to see the the gold go on. Steve.
john53
Thanks Steve, I just added shoulder harnesses and lap belts, I will be ordering the gold paint this week.---John Edited May 5, 2018 by john53
john53
I added the drop tanks, masked then sprayed it Tamiya gold, rattle can TS-21.---John
john53
I did some touch up around the cockpit, canopy rails and gun sight. I still have the silver on the tail, stab leading edges, around the nose intake and the tip of the drop tanks.---John
john53
I masked for the black on the anti glare panel on the nose. It woud be easier with an air brush but not having that set up I masked with Tamiya tape and cling wrap. Should do the trick.---John
john53
Masks are off, not to awful shabby. I still have to mask for the nose ring and tail-stabs leading edges for the silver---John

JohnS
Very nice! Brings back memories of seeing the Golden Hawks for the first time on the air show circuit, & building a model of one of jets. My build didn't look quite a good this this one. 🙁
john53
Thanks, the work is slow, I have too many "irons in the oven". I just took the mask off the nose then painted the radome black. I used Tamiya Silver Leaf TS-30 spray for the nose ring. Tail and stab leading edges next. BTW I started building models around 1963-1964 time frame. So my first models back then weren't even close to what I do today. I didn't start really doing quality work till the 80's, I discovered wet sanding, plastic putty and a world of great kits , Tamiya, Hasegawa, Airfix, outside of my usual Revell, Monogram, Hawk, Aurora, AMT and Lindberg.---John
john53
I've started masking to finish the NMF on the wing, stab and tail leading edges. I am cutting back on tape and am going to try post it note patches and Saran Wrap cling wrap.---John
john53
The painting is done. Ready to decal and add landing gear.---John
john53
The slats are on and decals started.---John
john53
One side done, along with top and bottom wings. Now to do the right side then add the landing gear and doors.---John Edited July 15, 2018 by john53
john53
The decals are going on OK but they are not sized right. The national insignia is not in the correct location over the speed brake, it's half on and half off the speed brake door, should be centered. I will live with it but if I ever do it again I will use after market decals. Not even sure if these could have been properly altered. Some of the markings seem "quirky" and a bit out of size to me or the kit isn't engineered right. I think it's more the decals.---John
freshnewstart
Nice paint 👍😊

john53
Thanks Steve, I have nothing but the highest regards for Tamiya's spray paints. They do a beautiful job, just wish there were more FS colors to choose from.---John Edited July 15, 2018 by john53
john53
I never really explained the sugar scoops I scratch built. They are from left over parts of the 1/72 Revell Germany Eurofighter single seat kit. I think they were scoops to a weapons or electronics pod of some sorts. I shaped them to what looked right to my eye.---John
john53
Three more pieces to add and it's done.---John Edited July 16, 2018 by john53
