john53
While waiting for paint for my other projects I decided to start this. I'm doing it as a natural metal finish plane with RCAF markings from the mid 1950s.I am using the Hobbycraft kit. I have the cockpit partially done, there are a few things to alter to make it fit right. The right side console 23 is about 1 1/2 mm longer than the left console so I placed it 1 1/2 mm further forward other wise it hits an pushes item 24 the rear bulkhead. The seats foot rests have to have 1 1/2 mm trimmed off of them or the hit and jam the instrument panel and knock it crooked. I also leave the control stick off as it seems to get knocked off when you put the seat in later. The last time I trimmed a little off the control stick boot and wedged it in between seat and instrument panel. The instruction sheet is very vague so don't even use it except as a general guide.---John Edited May 6, 2018 by john53
john53
This clarifies what I was getting at, the rear edges of the consoles should be somewhat even, the front doesn't matter.---John
john53
Here are two ways to correct the seat so it doesn't interfere with the instrument panel. The Mk 6 I cut the foot rests down by 1 1/2 mm and the F-86E I trimmed the foot rests to a little wider than the instrument panel pedestal's width. HTH---John
Joel_W
John, Â Â your detail painting really makes quite a difference. It's even more impressive when one realizes that we're looking at 1/72 scale. Joel
Snowbird3a
John,  FWIW, the Sabre Mk5 had grey cockpit and seat with a black instrument panel.  Cheers, Tony  (decals are on the way)
john53
Tony thanks, isn't my image above right, gray cockpit and seat and black instrument panel and side consoles? I did the side of the consoles gray, only the tops of the consoles are black where the instruments are. Hope I nailed it.---John Edited May 6, 2018 by john53
john53
I have the seat almost done and painted. I just need to make some harnesses out of tape. I cut the foot rests width wise so they now straddle the instrument panel pedestal. I have the seat in place as a test, it won't be glued in until last, after the plane is painted and just prior to adding the canopy.---John
Snowbird3a
Ah yes, I can see now.  Now back to our  regular scheduled program
john53
The forward fuselage has been weighted, about 3/4 oz. I added the cockpit, left it loose and unglued, then closed up the fuselage halves and added the nose ring. I glued the cockpit to the fuselage via the nose wheel well after I aligned the intake tube to the nose ring. Looks like the nose ring and bottom seam need a touch of putty.---John Edited May 8, 2018 by john53
john53
The fuselage is sanded and the wings added. Blue Angels just flew over, just missed them, saw 4 contrails headed to MacDill. Won't be at bench much next few days!!!!---John
john53
Moving right along, everything sanded up and the stabs are on. Almost ready to paint, I am doing it NMF, have 2 different shades so far, may get a third.---John
Joel_W
John,  Looking pretty darn good. Whose NMF's will you be using? Joel
john53
Does anyone know if the scoops were used on the Mk 5. I am referring to the ones on the fuselage near the wing trailing root edge. I had heard they were added mid 1958, my subject is around 1953 to 1955.---John Edited May 12, 2018 by john53
Joerg
John, AFAIK the scoops were purely a feature of the Canadair Sabre Mk.6. You should be OK without them. Cheers, Joerg
john53
I believe this is a Mk 5 Canadair GH and one on display, serial 23221 is a Mk 5 serial number.---John Edited May 12, 2018 by john53

Cheers, Joerg Classic example of bad information  The scoops were a feature of Orenda powered Sabres, both Mk5s & Mk6s. They came into use in the mid`58 timeframe.  Thats why GH Mk5s have the sugar scoops
john53
Thanks, my Sabre Mk 5 I am modelling is 1955, so I don't need them.---John
john53
I have the drop tanks assembled and the unit that goes on the rear deck under the canopy assembled and painted.---John
john53
I just removed the masks. I sprayed the gun panels and rear exhaust panel Tamiya light gun metal TS-42. Next is Tamiya TS-17 gloss aluminum then Tamiya TS-30 silver leaf.---John
Joel_W
John,   Looking forward to seeing how she looks in a full NMF. Joel
john53
I am doing the version that come with the Hobbycraft decals. It calls for a red tail tip, the side number is SU-350. The red color on the instructions has a question mark. Would anyone know if the tail tip was actually red? It's supposedly from Summerside in 1955. Thanks---John
Snowbird3a
John, the SU is the identifier for the CFS in Trenton, not Summerside .

Thanks---John I seriously doubt the tail tip is red, it looks like a bog-standard grey tail tip of all Sabres; Â the H-stab area is red, as are the outer wings. I'm guessing that this a/c in 1955 was in Europe with either 434, 439, or 441 sqns. this pic dates to after the 'sugar scoops' were installed (mid '58) Edited July 2, 2018 by Snowbird3a
john53
Thanks, so it's paint in 1955 is a bit of a mystery as this is 1958. Thanks so much for the image, it's the only one I have ever seen. So if it was in Europe in 1955 would it have had the red stabs and wings? I have no clue what the RCAF painted their planes in the European theater while serving with NATO? I do think I have seen NMF and camo? I have a hard enough time trying to keep up with the USAF and it's units, this is all new to me. Again thank you for the image.---John
