Thanks, so it's paint in 1955 is a bit of a mystery as this is 1958. Thanks so

much for the image, it's the only one I have ever seen. So if it was in Europe

in 1955 would it have had the red stabs and wings? I have no clue what the RCAF

painted their planes in the European theater while serving with NATO? I do think

I have seen NMF and camo? I have a hard enough time trying to keep up with the

USAF and it's units, this is all new to me. Again thank you for the image.---John

Mk5s were delivered in NMF, but were painted camo soon after.  No, it would not have any red sections if it was a NMF aircraft in Europe.  Google Image search of Canadair Mk5s should give you an idea of a typical squadron Sabre.  Or just continue on your path with the SU codes,  assume, if you will that it will before ‘58.

Thanks Tony, that's what I have been doing. Most units in that time frame

had a gray tail tip with a black area on the leading edge of the gray tail tip.

I think Hobbycraft's red tipped tail is out there as I see no units with that

color scheme. Were the "arctic red" areas of the wings and stabs similar

to the same thing the U.S. did with their interceptors in Alaska? They were

red to spot if they crashed in the snow or heavily forested areas.---John

After an exhaustive search I am going with what Hobbycraft says minus

the red tail tip. The tail will be standard light gray with black strip on tail's

leading edge of light gray area.---John

John,

Panel Air Brush work certainly is time consuming, not to mention it just chews up Tamiya tape at an alarming rate, but the finished panels are certainly worth all of it.

do you have share in Tamiya Tape??

great work mate!

Angelos I use the tape because I have NO AIRBRUSH. All my models

are done with brush painting for details and spray cans. It's an art form

to me and those don't get it or understand it's my way and it ain't going

to change for me EVER! Or as my old boss use to say " It is what it is".---John

I know this is not that relevant being that a RCAF is under construction but I have seen pictures of RAF Sabres in the UK with NMF and the red sections. I believe this was how they or most were delivered. Course they lost them & went camo pretty quickly.

Yes and No---I can't prove or disprove that. I lived in the U.S.A. all my life

so I never saw RCAF Sabre 5s on a daily basis back in the day. I am just

going by what I see and am told by the good people from Canada.---John

As a side note I am still pondering the red, do I or don't I? This is

worse than the black or gray cockpit for late Korean War U.S. Sabres!!!!???

When does the madness stop! LOL, never.---John

John,

No air brush, just rattle cans and hand painting. Your build just got a whole lot more interesting as  you're going on a completely different path then the vast majority of us.

You will never find the definitive pic, there was so many variations.  The Europe machines were clean NMF, the domestic Sabres had varying (standard) red panels.  Grab one pic and go with that.

  • 2 weeks later...

All done with the 3 NMF sprays. Now to touch up the gun sight area under the

wind screen, canopy rails, wheel wells and paint the tail tip light gray.---John
