A-1h Skyraider Loadout, Dieter Dengler,

Recommended Posts

So I'm currently working on a 1/32 A-1H Skyraider that was flown by Dieter Dengler.  Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot in the way of reference photos (at least that I've been able to find).  To the best of my knowledge he was flying some type of 'armed reconnaissance' mission, does anyone know what type of loadout that would be?  Photos of his plane or others that flew the same type of mission would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

From what I've seen most Air Force A-1s would carry a couple external tanks and then a load of 500 pounders sometimes mixed in with napalm or napalm and rocket pods.  I have a couple shots somewhere of a couple Skyraiders escorting a Super Jolly Green Giant and carrying rockets and C.B.U, dispensers.

Not really relevant since Dengler was a Navy pilot. Ordinance would prob be much different from what the AF was using.

I’d suggest using the pics in the cruise book Finn posted and go from there.  Maybe look at other Westpac cruise books from the same era.    On the bright side, I doubt anyone will be able to prove you wrong.

In his book, "Escape from Laos", Dengler mentions only bombs but doesn't specify what sort or how many.  You will find his recounting of the mission on Skyraider.org here:

At the bottom of that page is a link to photos supplied by Dengler which ought to give some guidance.  I'd go with the mixed load of WWII types toward the bottom.

There's a color photo, 11 o'clock angle, of Dengler's "504" on the hangar deck, loaded.  Twin fuel tanks, seven bombs (three on each - folded - wing, a larger one, perhaps 1000 lbs, on the centerline).

I wasn't able to attach it (only very-small images possible), but if you send me a PM with your email I'll forward it.
