Greenghost
Hi, Just curious about how do you guys prepare your kits before applying primer and/or painting. Do you polish the surface as car buliders do? Thank you.
Darren Roberts
The only time I do anything to the surface of the plastic is if I'm doing a natural metal finish. Then I'll throw down a coat of Alclad Gray Primer. Other than that, I simply spray paint onto the model. I don't even wash the plastic before building. The reason for doing this? I build for the enjoyment of completion and any steps I can cut out that still lead to a decently completed model I'll skip.

I usually go over the model with a tack cloth to remove any hair or dust particles before priming. I lightly sand the primer with 6000 grit and 8000 grit sandpapers afterwards. Janissary
I use 0000 steel wool and scrub the entire model under thinly running water. This creates a smooth but slightly dull surface finish. Ideal for the primers and paint to hold onto.
dnl42
If the plastic has a rough texture, I'll rub it down with polishing cloth. An example is the otherwise excellent Roden 1/144 C-47. I always wash the model with 91% isopropyl alcohol. I prime with Mr Surfacer thinned with Mr Leveling Thinner. This is an outstanding primer.
