andy_e
Hello all, I've got a question regarding the cowlings of Spitfires IX. There's a decal set by DK Decals, which covers Spitfires VI/VII/IX. It's 48014, profiles can be seen here: http://www.dkdecals.cz/48014_ZS.jpg Option 10 has a cowling with a short bulge, which is referred to as "initial IX cowling produced by Rolls Royce" here (last pic on the site): http://spitfiresite.com/2010/04/spitfire-mk-ix-xi-and-xvi-variants-much-varied.html So, my question: is this cowling available in 1/48? All my searches led to nothing. Thanks for your help in advance! Edited June 20, 2018 by andy_e Spelling
seawinder
Well, it's not in the Eduard kits, so I'm betting the answer is no. Shouldn't think it'd be that hard to scratchbuild, and you're going to have to relocate the oil fill port and add some panel lines anyway.
andy_e
Yeah, my first try was the Eduard kit, and also their Brassin cowlings, but it seems they only have the later ones. Scratchbuilding it is then. Thanks for your answer!
RCAFFAN
It was done in 1/72 by AZ Models: http://www.azmodel.cz/produkt/spitfire-mk-ix-early-converted/ and a conversion by Freightdog: https://www.freightdogmodels.co.uk/military-products/military-aircraft-conversions/1-72-scale/freightdog-models/freightdog-1-72-spitfire-ix-conversion-early-rr-converted.html but not aware of 1/48. These were actually Mk VCs converted to IXs by Rolls Royce by installing Mk IX engines and reworking the engine panels (side panels were extended too).....
MarcB
I think Airwaves (from the UK, distributed by Hannants) had one...but probably long OOP now. HTH Marc B
Griffin
Yes they did Marc, but it was based on a regular shaped Mk IX cowling, with some extra panel lines and bulges to give the look...... not that great. Do the same as they did at the factory, with an extended Mk V cowling etc....is the best way to go. Tried using some Tamiya "V" parts ( that's what was available in my spare box.... ) on an Eduard "IX", they don't match well from the box.... but can be persuaded. In fact, with all the "refurbishment" needed.... any "V" spare cowling should do the trick fairly well. The most difficult is to find good enough pics of the actual thing ( can always send what i've found so far, if it can help ).
andy_e
Thanks to all for your answers. I think I'll try to rework a "V" cowling.
DonSS3
It may be worth looking here: http://barracudacals.com/products.php?cat=14 Not guaranteeing what you're looking for is there, but it may be worth a look.

I'm afraid no joy either there or at Ultracast -- they both have only the standard production IX and XVI cowlings.
andy_e
Barracudacals and Ultracast were amongst the first places where I looked, but I came up empty. Thanks again to all for your ideas and suggestions! Edited June 26, 2018 by andy_e
RCAFFAN
Just for info purposes, the AZ kit uses a Mk IXC kit and provides resin top bulges and drawings on where to scribe in the seams for the panel changes to look like extended V side panels. Maybe not perfect (since starting with a proper IX top panel) but better than trying to start with a V nose. The Freightdog conversion gives an entire new nose to graft on (with the panel changes scribed in) plus resin bulges to add. I have both the kits in 1/72 but will probably use the AZ kit first time I do a converted early IX but may use the Freightdog too (designed for the Airfix 1/72 IXC) since I have decals for a few such machines.....
