john53
I have the intakes "mudded" up and will sand them tomorrow. I also decided to scratch build intake covers, nothing hard about them. I will put a piece of plastic card stock inside the intake to act as a backing bar so when I go to glue them in they won't fall inside.---John
john53
Just curious, will the closed nozzle for the 1/48 Hasegawa or Tamiya kits fit the Monogram kit? I want to do it as I have always seen them shut down in static mode, one nozzle open and one closed.---John
john53
Wings together, once they are set up I can sand them then install them in the lower fuselage and add the top fuselage. That will take care of the hardest part.---John
RKic
This may be the more low-tech of the 1980s F-14 kits, but based on your pics, it fits much better than the Hasegawa model 🙂 Good idea with the intake covers.
john53
Thanks, the repops from the late 90's by Revell done in China are horrible. The molds were altered and the plastic was weird. If I ever chose to do another 1/48 Revellogram F-14A it will be an early mold in the orange box from Monogram, preferably 1981 issue, that's what this one is.---John Edited July 29, 2018 by john53
john53
The wings are installed and the fuselage is closed up. After the glue sets I'll see what needs putty and sanding.---John
john53
I lucked out. While digging through my spares box I came across an early gun vent by Steel Beach I had bought for a Revell F-14A that ended up trashed. Now all I need to find is one closed exhaust nozzle!---John

john53
I started filling the worse seams. They actually aren't as bad as I've done before on this kit. They aren't huge gaping gaps like the 90's repop of this was.---John
RKic
That raised detail is going to be fun to recreate
john53
I sanded the filled seams and it doesn't look all too bad. A little more filling on the fuselage sides then back to adding parts.---John
john53
Nose fit isn't bad but I got lots of filing and filling for the resin gun panel. I never was a big fan of resin, it's nice but a pain removing the blocks and extra material, that's why I guess a lot of modelers complain to kit makers, do it right so I don't need resin and PE!!!!!---John Edited August 1, 2018 by john53
john53
I whittled at it for a few minutes and it's almost to the right configuration!---John
john53
The nose and resin gun panel are on. Guess what? More filling and more sanding!!!!!---John

john53
Question for the Tomcat experts. Does this look right as far as dimensions go? This is my Monogram F-14A with closed Hasegawa nozzle and an open Monogram nozzle.---John
Mr.Happy
John, Nice work on the ol Monogram Cat👍 From your photo the Hasegawa burnercan looks a tad to big for the Monogram aft fuselage. Personally I’d stick with the Monogram burnercans . (Just my $.02) Like said nice work and hope to see 👀 the next update good sir📸 Cheers, Mr. Happy {In name only)
john53
Don't really want to. I want it as I have seen them at static, one open, one closed. Which way is it too big? sticking out from the fuselage or diameter wise. Thanks---John
Mr.Happy
John, From the photo if I’m understanding it correctly (looking from a birds 🐦 eye view) it’s (The Hasegawa) circumference is to wide. Since I’m not see it in person I’m just going by what I’m seeing in you photo of the burner cans. Sorry I hope this did not upset you or confuse you☹️ I was just hoping to offer a second pair of eyes 👀 perspective. As an alternative if at all possible you may try Steel Beach to see if they have a open and closed can set for the Monogram/Revell Tomcat. ( I realize you are not a fan of resin replacement parts but it may be the better way to go) The old Monogram kits always had great cockpit details , great job on that too. Keep up the good fight, Mr. Happy (In name only)
john53
You are right about it being a bit too wide, it's approximately 1/4 to 1/2mm. That's sandable or if I had a lathe I'd chuck it up and turn a bit off the diameter. Thanks for the second opinion and Steel Beach would be the way but they seem to have given up or don't find Monogram profitable enough. It looks ridiculous with 2 open cans in static after seeing the real deal for 27 years at air shows. Thanks again and I'll make it fit or maybe some other resin maker still does it.---John Edited August 5, 2018 by john53
john53
This would be the cats' "dairy air"! But I believe Tamiyas' is way to small to fit Monogram or just use a Tamiya kit but it's a Revell-Monogram GB! I guess we need a Tamiya GB? Just think of the time and aggravation that would be saved!---John Edited August 5, 2018 by john53 corrected punctuation
twong
The Academy F-14A has two sets of open/closed exhausts. They fit the Monogram kit perfectly. Here is the sprue from the Academy kit. I cut the Monogram outer exhausts off leaving just the burner cans then attached the Academy parts to them. Here is the original Monogram exhaust on the right next to the modified Academy exhausts on the Monogram burner cans. Here are the Academy outer exhaust parts fitted to the Monogram burner cans. Here are the modified Academy exhausts dry fitted to the Monogram kit.
twong
You also don't always have to have one exhaust open and one closed. Here is an example of both exhausts open. There are quite a few other photos online showing both exhausts open.
john53
That's a nice picture of both open but I myself in the flesh have NEVER seen it that way. I am building this basically for me, you may not get it but it's what I want, what I have seen and , ask my wife, I am a bit, just a bit PIG HEADED!!!! I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but I build for me and what I know and have seen. And besides it just looks too dam cool to me! 😎😎😎😎😎 4 hours ago, twong said: The Academy F-14A has two sets of open/closed exhausts. They fit the Monogram kit perfectly. That way I could have the flame straighteners in both cans. If when my sanding attempts don't work I will try to locate some Academy parts. Your way is MOST excellent but I gotta try this first.
