john53
Enough of my whining, back to sanding, pictures soon.---John Edited August 5, 2018 by john53
john53
More sanding on the nose-gun panel area. It's almost there, I need to fill the front of the gun panel then on the other side of the chin pod the nose is a bit larger than the fuselage. It's pretty even all around except there so I'll add more putty to the fuselage to feather it in.---John Edited August 5, 2018 by john53
john53
I tried the idea of the Hasegawa closed nozzle on the Monogram burner can. So far so good, I cut the Monogram open one off, sanded it level then glued the Haseagwa one on centered. I still need to take about 1/2mm off the diameter of the Hasegawa closed one, it should sand down quick then I may have to blend the radius back in.---John
Mr.Happy
John, Great job on the kit bashing of the Hasegawa and Monogram burner can parts it looks much better 👍 Keep up the great work. Mr.Happy (In name only)
john53
Thanks, the nose and gun panel are looking good. I filled the gaps around the burner cans with super glue and sanded them in. What may look like a hair line seam is actually the clear super glue.Looking pretty decent. On to the tails.---John
Mr.Happy
Great job brother John 👍 Shes shaping up nicely. Mr H
picknpluck
Nice, John! I like your idea about splicing the burner cans. I've got some spare Tamiya cans...I'll have to try that on mine.
john53
Be aware the Tamiya cans are too small, so I've been told. But then again I was told these wouldn't work. Try it, I'm starting to not believe everything I hear on the net, where have I heard that before. LOL---John
K2Pete
I'm loving the adjustments you're making John! It's lookin' good! Pete
john53
Thanks Pete, I was just looking at my reference pictures to check out the beaver tail. From the only 2 good shots around the late 70s to early 80s the tail looks pretty much like Monogram's. There shouldn't be too many more alterations. Note the two OPEN burner cans!!!!!🤥🤥🤥---John
john53
I have the tails on, looks like I need some sanding on the beaver tail, surprise, surprise. This is the last update for a bit, I am on vacation next week so no modelling. Going to give my nerves a break from my "relaxing hobby".---John
john53
I may take even more time off, after this is done I have these recent additions. The F-105D will be done next year or later, I have to sand stuff off to do it as a Vietnam bird with JV tail codes, that can wait. It comes with the old Revell, AKA Ace, A-6E which I will build soon as an A-6A, Devil 505 from VA-196. I have some back dating and scratch building on this one. I am going to take my time so these two "beauties" won't be in the GB. I only bought this because it was the only way I coud get a Revell( Monogram) F-105D. I have no interest in the Trumpeter one, nose is off and decals for the instruments???? Seriously? I have seen the Trumpeter done nicely but it's not for me.--John Edited August 11, 2018 by john53

Here is the sprue from the Academy kit. I cut the Monogram outer exhausts off leaving just the burner cans then attached the Academy parts to them. Here is the original Monogram exhaust on the right next to the modified Academy exhausts on the Monogram burner cans. Here are the Academy outer exhaust parts fitted to the Monogram burner cans. Here are the modified Academy exhausts dry fitted to the Monogram kit. If the Academy nozzles fit onto the Monogram burner cans Twong, would it be too far of a stretch to assume that the Aires set for Academy would fit the Monogram as well? I don't own any Aires products for the Monogram or Academy F-14's so I can't comment on that. I thought I read though that Aires usually reboxes their items. If they initially made the burner cans for Hasegawa, they will rebox them and just print Academy or Hobby Boss on the package. I know they did that with cockpit sets. If Aires made the burner cans specifically for the Academy kit they should fit the Monogram with no problems. Aires also makes a really nice cockpit set for the Academy F-14A. I don't know if it is just a rebox though from the Hasegawa set.

john53
The main landing gear and wheels are assembled. The wheels are just set on, they need to be removed, have the seam on the center of the treads sanded then masked and sprayed. A little sanding on the mains then those can be sprayed also.---John
john53
The main landing gear and tires are ready to go, I also tried my hand at "free handing" the red edge doors with my 10 O brush.---John

john53
I pulled this off the shelf to find the right wing glove had split apart. I obviously didn't have enough glue or sanded it too rigorously. It's been re glued with super glue and sanded down. Now to mask the wing glove sealing bags and paint them dark gray then mask and spray the leading edges of the wings, tail and stabs coroguard.---John Edited September 27, 2018 by john53 grammar error
