Zvezda Star Destroyer - a new detailing project

Recommended Posts

Nice one - hope you'll do a thread on it?

As for AM stuff, I'd go the Falcon garbage chute and the Green strawberry hangar bay as its better for lighting than the  Falcon set. The only issue I have with the PE set is that it looks and feels too much like PE, which is why I did a combination of both. What parts you add will be determined by your budget.  I probably spent more than I needed to TBH

I did a lighting test tonight of the bridge and I am happy with how it turned out. I made a number of mistakes on the internals and had numerous electrical issues but I got there in the end.

I've also been cutting away at the body to accommodate the fibers. I've actually finished the whole top but just haven't taken any pics yet because it's not daylight

Anyway, I just wanted to share the results of the lighting. I'm really happy with how it came out.

Till next time

Mucho gracias!

I've decided to do an ANH version with the blockade runner in the main hanger bay.   As such I won't be doing the garbage shute.

I've ordered a Blockade Runner off Shapeways.   Here is some other stuff I'm considering:

- resin main hanger bay

- battleship turrets for the main turbolasers

- ANH bridge panel off Shapeways

- tractor beam projectors off Shapeways

I'm not worried about being 100% accurate to the original ANH filming model.  I just want to get those few distinguishing features that help it stand out.   The rest will be some scratchbuilding old-school style with various greebles from my spares!

I will also be using LEDs to light up the engines and main hanger bay.   Not sure yet if I'll be doing the fiber optics for Windows.

You have definitely inspired me!

I had no idea there even was a face plate available. I did buy the turbo lasers but not the tractor beam projectors - although I probably should've as they're a pretty important part that Zvezda missed for some reason.  I just wasn't overly impressed by the quality of the 3D printing on the photos I saw - not enough to buy some. I think that's another item Falcon should make - I'd buy it. His quality is brilliant I must say.

I'm glad to hear your not hung up with reproducing the studio model with a view to make it your own. Personally, I find it more enjoyable and less limiting doing it the free and easy way. I generally don't give out advice, but I've been asked so many times before, when you go to detail it, try to make it look functional  - other wise it just looks like bits stuck on.

Yeah.....the question of whether to fiber or not to fiber. That is the question all young Jedi set out to seek. Again, personally, I prefer fibers to bare LED's behind the walls. I get the whole moving light source aspect, but if done wrong, you can loose the effect - especially if its not reflective enough on the inside. You could build light boxes behind the walls with strip ELD's glued onto the back wall but you wouldn't be able to get the random orange lights without fibers.

Look forward to seeing what you do with yours when it comes time.

OOOOoooo that light test turned out nice. Looking really good in those pictures.

Patiently waiting for more 🙂

Thanks Brett 🙂 It'll be a few weeks now till another update as I am off to my Mother in Laws inevitable funeral on Tuesday before flying to NZ to spend what will likely be a not so festive Christmas break

Rest assured, once I have finished the neck off I will be posting some pics. I am in the midst of painting the neck walls and finishing off the detailing to the front panels now. The roof of the bridge is current;y drying and should be able to be released from it's clamps tomorrow

Thanks for showing an interest guys. I hope you all have a safe and sound Christmas break!

Till next time

Si

2 days back and I have already pretty much finished the bridge and neck section. I'll run a light grey wash over it once everything has dried and sealed proper. There are still a couple of sections I need to hand brush to bring up to spec.

I'll take some lit shots once I have connected the remaining fiber optics.

That's it for now. I have to finish painting the big antenna in the middle as well as replace all the broken projections on the shield generators but I'll do that once the bridge is attached to the body

As always, thanks for looking

Si

I'm glad I logged in .. if only to see this wild gif!  Thanx, you made my day!   :woot.gif:

Now ... this build of yours, the extra details do look functional and really makes, not only this model, but your others too, really 'pop' ... just a gorgeous job that unfortunately won't be appreciated by viewing the finished model ... but WE appreciate it!

One other thing, I noticed some bevels and your precise cuts ... what tool do you use to make these perfect 90° cuts?   and the bevels too?

thanx

Pete

It is pretty out there isnt it

I use a  standard razor blade and my mark1 eyes to cut the styrene into shapes. Nothing fancy im afraid 🙂

Hey guys
It's been a while since I last touched this but after numerous side projects (some successful some....not so much) I figure it was about time to get this going again and maybe even finish it this year - although being over half way through I doubt it. I'd just like to finish it all together really..

So, I have finished detailing the hangar bay and it is currently drying off the black base coat ready for the light strips to be attached. I am waiting on 2 new ones as I screwed up the first set by cutting it in the wrong place. I had the right number of LEDs for the amount of holes but the strip requires another 2 at the end for it to work properly, so the last 2 LEDs didn't light up. Good thing they're cheap! I'll have to black out the last 2 LEDs once I install the new set.
As you can also see, there is a lot of artistic license going into this. None of this stuff is on the filming model but then I am building this for me and not a paying person so it's kind of irrelevant really

The TIE hangar is installed and it actually works. Just need to tidy a few things up and then that's done.

I had made a start on the side walls in Jan before I lost patience with it and they haven't moved since these pics were done

I also painted (badly) the Blockade runner. This will need a lot of touching up before I'm happy with it

Still a long way to go yet but hopefully I can keep up some momentum and get something done. I was looking at the photos I took of the Super Star destroyer and started to drool at the thought of starting it. Then I remembered it's resin and there is a fair amount of work to do on it and the drool dried up pretty quickly, but I will start it hopefully once this one's done - if I haven't over detailed myself out by then.

Anyway, that's all I have for now but thanks for sticking around and having a look-see
Cheers
Si

Looks good and it's great to see progress being made again on it. I can imagine it's slow going with all the tiny detail you're adding and that can get tedious. But.....the end look you're achieving, very nice!

Keep it up!

Continuing along now with the painting and installation of the main hangar bay. It's been drilled out in places for lights and I'm waiting on delivery of my LED tape

I've also started on the top layer of the superstructure - or wedding cake as it has been referred to by others.

Test fitting of the neck shows there could be some issues ahead, but nothing insurmountable

Thanks for looking

Got more work done with the top layer 3/4 finished. I still have more surfacing to do but I'm hoping to knock out a fair bit tonight (if World of Warships doesn't interrupt me)
I won't go to crazy on the roof though but you can see a clear difference between the kit surface and mine. Some might say that's not a good thing but I like it. Besides, once the paint goes on the busyness will disappear. I've glued on the sidewalls and then will drill out the remaining windows. The roof is just sitting on there until I have threaded through the fibers - a task I am not looking forward to.

I still have to drill out that center bit on the nose of the lower layer. I'll run some piping into it to make it more interesting.
That's all I have but thanks for looking
