The Madhatter
hi guys quick update. I've finished with the top side of the nose section for now and won't be adding any more surface detail to it until it's joined to the rear section. I'll be moving on the the main superstructure sidewalls and finish those off plus the roof sections and then add the last of the surface detail to the right side. Sorry for worktop pictures, but I couldn't be bothered getting out the photo tent tonight - too much effort It's current rest place: Well, that's it for now but as always, thanks for stopping in and having a look Till next time Si
phantom
Neat, but those aerodynamics must buger the gas mileage!
The Madhatter
So, I have managed to get most of the starboard sidewalls and roof parts detailing done with only 3 left to go. Then it'll be time to blend in the walls to the surface and add some other stuff around - then the last part of the top side surface detailing will be over. I'm still deciding if I will paint first then add the fiber or vice versa. I'm leaning toward paint first because I just think it'd be too hard to be able to trim off fibers without damaging the paint work but shuddering at time it'll take to do it like that. No pain no gain right? Anyway, here's some pics of where I am at currently That's it for now, but as always, thanks for stopping in and having a look Si
Trojan Thunder
Rather impressive as usual Si. Showing the Tamiya bottle in the picture really show how small the bit you have added are! I'd be interested to see a picture of the stuff you are using to spruce the SD up.
The Madhatter
thanks Ray. The picture you would like would be pretty easy to take as its just strip styrene and some ship kit parts. I will take a "group shot" of the work bench which will show you all the bits and pieces
Thommo
Incredible work, bloody outstanding. I showed my wife & she was blown away by the detail & lighting you have added.
JesniF-16
Glad to see this project is going strong again Simon! With all the layers of detail I could stare at this model all day! /Jesse
The Madhatter
Thanks very much for the appreciation guys. I have managed to get a fair bit done over the past few days but won't be posting an update until I have finished the detailing on the whole top surface. Mind you, there's not much left to do but it'll be a few weeks until I'm done. Thankyou both though for posting your thoughts. Im glad to hear someone's wife is impressed with the work im doing! Wish I had the same level of support
Aigore
Your keep spoiling us with your meticulous detailing! It's pure joy to see 😄
The Madhatter
Thanks Janne! I'm almost done with the top side surface detailing and will be posting an update soon. Im still undecided about painting first then adding the FO or the other way around. Currently leaning towards paint first.
The Madhatter
I had the camera out today for other things and decided today is a good a day as any to take a couple of update shots. I'm not as far along as I would have liked but I had the spare time. I'm almost finished the top. I just have to finish the edging and then the top will be considered done. I test fitted the bridge to the body to make sure I could. There are definitely going to be fitting issues but nothing some super glue won't take care of. Looks like I'll also have to add some more details once the body has been glued together to help tie in the areas better. This adds to the ever compounding issue of painting first or not (first world problems....) Anyways, that's all the pics I took but thanks for looking in. Si
spejic
You combine a prop modeler's eye for what is photogenic with a hobby modeler's concern for detail. I love the feeling of scale these additions create.
Aigore
Sacred bovin..... that looks amazing! And massive!
The Madhatter
thanks guys. This is on hold for a short time while I finish off another project (I needed a break from the SD to be honest) However, when I pick this up again in a few weeks, it should see some paint, so at least there will be something different to styrene chips and resin bits to look at
The Madhatter
Hello once again everyone. It's been few months since this was last updated and sorry to say, I haven't done as much as you might hope I had, but I have finished off the top section - well, mostly. I still have the SMD's to add for the trench spot lighting but in regards to detailing, that's all done So here is the top section shown as finished. I added some of the bits that sort of frame some of the lines to balance it out. You'll catch my drift if you look at the last picture in the previous update and look to the left of the ship and you can see some chips that run down the mid-section in a line toward the front. They have been replicated on the other side to make it right. That was a lot of explaining for something so trivial, so I shall move on and let the pics do the talking: Its pretty much the same on the other side. I might yet bulk some of the rear section out some more but I need to see how the side walls go on first. I do need to sort out that section at the very back of the ship - looking at these reminded me about it The bottom hull has also been started. I made the very foolish mistake of gluing the nose to the body in a hurry to install the hangar bay. This in hindsight was very silly. I has also located glue marks and other blemishes on there and I am not happy about it. I do not know when or how they got there but I also realised I forgot to grind down the old hangar surrounds and it has created a gap where there shouldn't be and now I have to fix and live with my decision to install when I did. Still, none of this is unfix-able and I will fix it as much as I can accordingly. I just wish I hadn't created this unnecessary work for myself is all Well, that's all I have for now, but I will be back again soon enough. As always, thanks for stopping in and having a look Si
Aigore
Looks plenty! Still unbelievably fabulous! Most impressive! 😄
The Madhatter
Thanks Janne! All being well, I'll have a decent update next week
The Madhatter
Hi again everyone So, time for a small update. Things are progressing slower than I had hoped as I had to fix my screw up with the hangar bay installation. I've got one side sorted and I just need to finish the other side later on. I forgot to grind down the existing surface detail before slotting in the hangar bay, but it's fixable. You can see the gap that mistake left in the first pic if you look where it goes in. Then on the pic below it, you can see my fix for it which is working well. It looks very busy up here but the paint will bring that down a few notches. I'm also going to space out the detail more and not add as much the further back I go. I have to be careful not to over do it (although I dare say there are some of you who already think I'm well past that) as I fear I will loose the grandness of the ship. Well, that's all I have for now, but once I have done something worth taking pics of, I will of course update again. Feel free to critique, make a suggestion, comment or just do nothing at all but as always, thank you for stopping by and having a look Till next time Si
The Madhatter
hey guys Well, the cursed COVID continues and so does this build. Over 2 years now and lots more to do. I've slowed down a bit lately due to other things on the go but there is some progress - probably not as much as you'd like. but there is some I spent a few hours on the dome thing on the bottom and I am pretty happy with how it's come out (one 1 side anyway - haven't done the other yet). I've added stuff to the man hull plates and now I'm concentrating on the raise edges along the center of the ship. I'm going to do concentrated pockets of details here and there but lessen it as I work outward You can see the difference in the 2 sides one of the overall shots. It's pretty bare on the right and not so much on the left. As I say frequently, I need to be careful not to loose the sheer size of it with too much detail. From afar, and under paint, it'll look a lot less busy but up close is where the time spent on this will come through. Anyway, enough words, you came to see pics, so here's my latest update Looks like I need to fix a couple of sprue pipe too: Anyways, that's all I have sorry. Sorry for the yellowish photos but I couldn't be bothered getting the light tent set up tonight, but next time, I'll hopefully have better quality photos As always, thanks for stopping by and having a look! Stay safe and I'll catch you round the boards Si
The Madhatter
Here are a couple of pics of the start of my base. Doesn't look much now but these are just detail tiles which will form a much bigger area later on Yes, there will be a trench for X-Wings to run down 🙂 This base idea is nothing new, but I have always wanted to have a go at building something like this and this is the perfect time. If it fails, then I'll just stick to a pole and mirror (with something built along the sides or similar. I have a back up plan!)
The Madhatter
Hi everyone Well, my replacement grid sheets finally arrived last week and I have now finished my master which I will make a cast of tomorrow and hopefully, will be able to produce enough copies to cover a large area. Started off with this: Ended up with this: Will post the results of the casting even if it fails Thanks for looking Si
The Madhatter
I wasn't going to update this one as no one really seems interested anymore, so this is mostly for the people who are following it. While I wait for my new 3D printed tile to arrive, I have been quietly working away on the ship and have finally finished one side. Now I just need to start the other side.... I know it's getting old, but I am trying to get a shuffle on this one as I want it done for Expo next year (providing its on of course) Well, that's it for now, but as always, thanks for looking! Cheers Si Edited October 10, 2020 by The Madhatter
ExchefAndy
I'm one of those who are guilty of following along and not commenting. I've always thoroughly enjoyed your sci-fi work and frankly, I'm envious of your skills! Whether you post here, or elsewhere in future... I'll be sure to be watching your output Regards Andy P.s I hope to get to expo one day myself!
Trojan Thunder
I'm still here as well Si, the base looks interesting and I will be interested to see how it turns out. The detail work on the SD is also looking very good.
Aigore
Good grief, those details around the dome must be absolutely minuscule! I haven't been around for a while to check on your progress because reasons but I see you have made awesome progress! Cheers mate!
