Hello ARC,

This will be my first time participating in a group build. I was rummaging through my stash when I found this.

It was a bit of an impulse buy a few years back and it'll probably have sat in my stash unbuilt for a long time.

This GB gives me the motivation to clear this "Revell" kit but it barely qualifies since it really is Eduard's plastic in the box.

The box comes with 2 decal schemes;  Manfred von Richthofen's famous red plane and a green example flown by Ludwig Beckmann.
The sprues are all red, loudly hinting that you should build the Baron's plane.

The reboxing does not include the photo etch found in the original Eduard kit so I will be adding some aftermarket seat belts.

This will be my first WW1 plane!

Starting with the interior, I painted the fabric portions olive green and wood grained the appropriate panels.

My first time simulating wood grain, it was done with a acrylic dark yellow coat followed by brush streaking with burnt sienna oil paint.

Thanks for looking folks!

Thanks phantom!

On with the build.
I've gotten most of the cockpit painted up.

This Revell boxing does not come with instruments so I scratched some up with a punch and some Airscale decals.

Dry fitted together.

It is also lacking a throttle quadrant. I'll scratch one up and close up the cockpit.

Thanks for dropping by folks.

Beautiful interior!!!

Thanks Phantom!

Finished up a big part of the construction today.

As this will be a simple overall red scheme, I decided to assemble the major pieces before painting.
I'm hoping that this won't complicate painting too much while making the overall build stronger.
The interplane struts didn't give me too much trouble but the wheel supports were fiddly.

I have to finish up the tailplane before starting the paintwork.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Pete!
They switched from ropes to seatbelts after pilot complaints about chaffing on their delicate parts.

I thought it was when Hauptman von Mittens couldn't untie the knot and all the other pilots laughed at him?

Very nicely built!

I also enjoy the Eduard sprues in red plastic!

Thank you sir!

However, I really do wish that they molded the plastic in something other than red. It makes it really hard to see and correct flaws.

Moving along...

I thought I had the seam squared away but it reappeared after a few days.
The black filler is a mix of black primer and super glue.

I broke all 3 control horns drilling holes for the cables, so I had to scratch up some replacements.

I double-sided taped her to a wooden block so I could paint her all at once.

Looks red to me. 😂

And shiny too!

Thanks for the kind words fellas!

Kit decals going on. Only 20 total! I did them all in one sitting. So refreshing.

I think each phoenix missile on the tamiya tomcat had twice that.

The decals were very nice and thin. They conformed to the details without fuss.

Clear coated the decals and slapped on a dark brown enamel wash.

I was hoping the wash would subtly show the rib tape detailing but no luck.

Perhaps it is for the better too as I didn't want to draw too much attention to them.

Not many panel lines on this one.

She's pretty fragile. I managed to break off the remaining control horns and a few struts while cleaning off the enamel wash.

Fortunately, the repairs aren't too obvious.

I'll spay on a matt coat and do a little oil weathering next.

Thanks for stopping by folks!

Looks amazing!  Great job and I've found the same thing - that these are pretty fragile aircraft.  Ditto with the control horns too.  UGH.  Can't wait to see the next steps!

Chris

Thanks Chris! I must've broken every fragile strut at least once and most of them repeatedly. Urgh.
