Calling all F-4J Vandy 1 experts!

Recommended Posts

Is the Microscale 72-137 sheet correct for a Vandy 1 aircraft? Specifically is the red trim around the blue areas with the stars the correct color?  Every aircraft I can find a photo of has gold trim. Is this a case of Microscale making a mistake or were there several paint jobs on this aircraft over the years? If so would someone be so kind to point one out for me.

Much appreciated.

Chris

on the 48-061 furball decal set, there is red outlines on the star bands of the XF vandy 9, and gold outlines on the "bunny" vandy 1 ones. they don't have the exact same shape either.

Vandy 9 and after it became Vandy 1 up until about 1975 had red outlines on the blue bands and flashes,  This was VX-4's trim colors and was used on all their aircraft.  After Vandy 1 became the star of the show aircraft, the red was replaced by gold.   The early aircraft as Vandy 9 and initially as Vandy 1 carried white XF tail codes and had the VX-4 Blue band/white stars and red trim carried on the wing tips, fin top and flashes on the fuselage.  On fuselage sides in white "Operational Test and Evaluation Force" lettering.   Vandy 1 sometime around 1972-3 had the XF tail codes replaced by a white Playboy Bunny on the fin, with the fin tip band also gone.  Trim on the wing tip and fuselage bands remained red at this time.   During the annual open house, then called the Space Fair,  flybys included live firings of Bullpup's, rocket pods and Vandy  1's live sidewinder firing at a flare dropped by an VX-4 S-2 over the ocean - all in front of the crowd line.  It was the open house to do in those days.
