swimmer25k
Any suggestions on painting the LEM? I covered the descent stage with gold foil, but didn’t look good. Considering airbrushing Alclad pale gold and then hitting with their clear orange, but I’m not convinced that it’ll look right. I live outside of DC and took a few pictures of the NASM LEM last Monday (ignore my kid in the shot). Any ideas on how to make this look right would be greatly appreciated. K2Pete
I've built almost 10 LM's and I'm still trying to figure out the best way to replicate the foil. If you just stuck the foil on tight to the model's surface, it's not gonna look right. I've seen some models that just don't have that "25 layers of Kapton" look to it, including, darn it, mine ... ) And instead of Gold paint, I've used Copper, Model Master Enamels, it's a heckuva lot closer than Gold. But bear in mind, there ARE 2 or 3 different shades of colour on the foil. And 1/72 is still doable, but you're getting into the teensy-weensy range ... the model in the lower Left is 1/72, Airfix though. And I haven't painted the foil on mine, I've used Candy Bar wrappers that I've collected over the years ( and NO, I couldn't even eat 'em, being Diabetic ... shucks ). The Copper paint is for touch ups and it colour matches perfectly. Any more questions, just fire away! Pete
crackerjazz
There's a thermal blanket that I bought online from KSC as Ricardo recommended. It's not as red as the foil on that LEM pictured on the box though. If you want I can cut up a portion for you. I don't see it online on KSC now, but I see one on Amazon, just boxed differently: https://goo.gl/images/x8TQBB https://www.amazon.com/Outdoors-Original-Emergency-Survival-Blanket/dp/B003Y6FFZM
habu2
For the descent stage I colored different foils with yellow and orange Sharpie permanent markers. For the ascent stage I used black construction paper and a yogurt foil that matched the off white color, cut to fit each panel. I don’t have links to any pics at the moment. Lunokhod 2
Make sure not to paint the ascent stage silver or aluminium, only Apollo 5, 9 and 10 had this main color for the ascent stage (the NASM LM does not exactly represent LM-5). You can get information on LM-5 (Apollo 11) on my 1/24 LM build (http://spacemodels.nuxit.net/LEM-24/index.htm) and also on my 1/32 LM build (http://spacemodels.nuxit.net/1-32 LM/index.htm).
