My 11-year old daughter loves to hang with dad on the workbench and build yellow and pink F-14 Tomcats.  :)  She loves space and finally convinced me (she really had to twist my arm) to get her a model of the International Space Station.  We were looking over the kit and she asked if we could put lights in it.  Well yes we can!  Problem is, I'm ignorant when it comes to electricity.  Anyone have recommendations for a beginners guide to adding lights to models?

One idea that comes to mind is to get one (or more) of those 'microlight'/mini-LED battery-powered light strings from Michaels' or Hobby Lobby, and place them inside the ISS modules as they're built.  The battery pack could be in/under a base or stand holding the ISS up.

While not really answering your question, this YouTube link provides some guidance, plus ideas about how to approach the process. And it will very definitely provide a tonne of inspiration to have a go. (It seems not hard and uses easy tools, but does require some patience.)

It's a well produced, easy to watch video by a talented Czech modeller, Plasmo:
