July87
Hello all, need help on matching the color on American Airlines new fuselage color. Thanks in advance.
okthree
I’m a pilot for AA so I get to see the colors up close. The official name of the color is silver mica. From a distance and on cloudy days it looks grey, but in bright sunlight it has a metallic look. There are metallic flakes evident in the paint when viewed in bright sunlight. The color is close to Boeing grey that the wings, engine pylons, and other parts are painted. To my eye aircraft grey is close. On a scale model the metallic sheen wouldn’t be noticed. One of these days I’ll get around to trying to match the paint as I have a couple of sheets to use in the new livery.
July87
That is ver helpful. Thank you very much.
okthree
Photo I took today showing the contrast in greys. The forward section of the engine is the silver mica of the fuselage while the aft section is Boeing grey. The far aft section tends to run darker from exhaust during reverser operation. Taken with my phone on a cloudy morning so not the best photo.

July87
I was able to match the boeign grey color. It was the fuselage the one that I just wasn't happy about. I found out there's a Tamiya silver mica color so I will try that on a spare set see how it comes out.
dylan
if you can get it, there is a silver mica colour by xtracolour specifically for airliners
okthree
Dylan, thanks for the heads up on the silver mica from Xtracolour. If I can find it I’ll give it a try and compare it to the real thing.
waltmert
I used Boeing grey on my entire AA 777-300 and I was very happy with the results pics to follow!!! walter
July87
I found a tamiya mica silver. Seems like it would be too silvery. I'll try it on a spare part and see.
okthree
I think the Tamiya silver mica is too silver. I had hoped to paint a few tests to compare with the real thing but didn’t have time before having to head out on my next trip. When I get back I’m going to try a few colors to see how they match up to the real thing. May take a week or so.

The wings, landing gear, gear doors and engine pylons on most of the Boeing fleet are Boeing grey. The exception is the 787 where wings and pylons are white. The fuselage has more blue in the shade of grey than Boeing grey.
dylan
well this is a nice bit of a coincidence. we just got an ex AAL 767 after the cargo conversion there was not much time for a complete repaint. but the touch ups were done with Boeing grey. I took a few shots in different light to illustrate that it all changes based on the lighting.

waltmert
I am pretty sure it is the stand that comes with the Zvesda 777-300.
okthree
Nice Triple. The colors look about right. Who made the decals?
waltmert
The model is 1/144 Zvesda 777-300. All painted Model Master Voodoo grey. Yes exactly, looks about right, which is perfectly close enough for me. Decals are NAZCA. I had a blast building that kit straight out of the box. Walter
July87
Just got the Tamiya 1:100 Embraer 175. Going to go with American Eagle livery.
Timo5
Painted my 777 the same way as Walter - Voodoo Grey all over - except I over-sprayed the fuselage and engines with clear mica. Looks right to me too Tim
AAB737800FO
The match for the finish is Gunze/ Mr. Color 338 and Tamiya TS65 Pearl Clear. I went over to the Maintenance hanger and was able to get a small sample.
Fly-n-hi
The AA 757s also have the dark grey coroguard on the wings. Its the only plane in the AA fleet that does. Not sure why...never got a good answer. Edited May 8, 2019 by Fly-n-hi
AAB737800FO
I have actually seen the 75 and 76 with the coroguard on both upper and lower surfaces.. I will see if I can provide an answer as to why when I'm at the maintenance hanger prior to my check flight tomorrow.
Fly-n-hi
All the 757s definitely have it but I’ve never seen a 767 with it. I could be wrong, though. I think I’ve flow every one. Edit: I should mention the coroguard is on the horizontal stabs, too. Edited May 20, 2019 by Fly-n-hi
