What's this guy doing?

For those with flight deck experience, what's the deal with the green shirt guiding(?) the pendant as it retracts back to the ready position?  Is this just to be sure it doesn't snake across the fowl line to potentially injure the unwary?  And what's the thicker part that the passes the green shirt just after he pulls back?  Permanent bend or twist?  It looks something like the center of the pendant that sees the most use.

Thanks.

riffraff has it right.

There is a certain point that you want number 3 wire at as sharp an angle to number 4 as you can get it.

I forget what they are called now (been a longggg time), but there are large "clip" like deals under each wire, that holds the wire up for the tail hook to catch it. They are in between the fairlead sheeves, so, the sheeves are anything to worry about,,,,,,just those guiding clips.

You don't want number 3 to catch on that as it is retracted.

The things used to suspend the cable above the deck was called (not sure if the still call them this) "bungees" and the reason why there isn't a guy on the other side of the landing area (called The LA) is because all the aircraft over there are parked aft of the wires and it is illegal to forward of the four wire so there is no need to ensure the wire doesn't cross the foul line.

That is where the center section of cable attaches to the two side ends...I believe the center section gets changed out and inspected every certain number of traps

100 traps or if more than (IIRC) three strands are broken.

IIRC this part was called the "knuckle".
