President George H.W. Bush Passed Away

Recommended Posts

I had the privilege of meeting him in 2003. We flew into Portland, ME and they told us there was a VIP flying out. I think he had been up there for the commissioning of the aircraft carrier named after him. Of course, US Airways, who was responsible for servicing our airplanes in Philly and DC, had once again failed to service the lav, in spite of our best efforts to get them to do it. The whole plane smelled like a porta-potty. A black SUV met us when we parked, and President Bush got out. It was a pretty day, and he wanted to stretch his legs before getting on the cramped CRJ. We were overnighting there and the other crew hadn't shown up, yet, so my first officer and I stood around talking airplanes with him for about 30 minutes. He was such a down-to-earth person, and talked to us as fellow aviators. To this day, I'm embarrassed for his having to fly on such a foul-smelling airplane.

Fair winds and blue skies, Mr President.
