Eduard 1/48 Spitfire Mk.VIII Weekend Edition

Recommended Posts

Been working on this off an on for a couple of days.  This is Eduards beautiful 1/48 Spitfire Mk.VIII in their Weekend Edition boxing.  Building this out of the box, and I mean out of the box!!!

So far the build process is fairly rapid thanks to the easy and precise fit of the kit however i've made things a little more complicated for myself by changing my method of painting and creating a more worn effect.  My normal plan of attack is the usual primer, preshade then final colour.  This time I'm trying a mottling effect using white and building the final finish in many layers.  My chosen scheme is that of RAAF 457 Sqn with a very attractive sharks mouth and the Eduard instructions suggest that the old RAF roundals were simply painted over, therefore I have replicated this also.

So my painting process began on the underside by using Tamiya XF-83 Medium Sea Grey as a light primer.  This was followed by the application of Tamiya XF-2 Flat White in a mottling fashion.  I grabbed a set of RAF Spitfire roundals and placed some masking tape over them and traced the outline to make a mask.  The RAF roundals were sprayed on top of the white mottling and then the roundals themselves received a mottled coat of white.  Preshading was done with XF-84 Dark Iron followed by a mottled coat of Medium Sea Grey to break everything up.  All paints were applied as a rough 80% Isopropyl Alcohol and 20% paint with a few drops of paint retarder sprayed at 10-15psi.

This method of mottling and changing colours regularly reguires a bit more patience than I had anticipated however the effect is worth it and for a first attempt, I'm pretty happy with it so far.

For the top side, a similar process followed bu using XF-82 Ocean Grey, again applying the roundals on both wings and fuselage.  Difference this time is that I began a chipping process with applying Aluminium to key areas that will be worn later on and this had a coat of hair spray applied on top to protect it.  Preshading this time used XF-85 Rubber black and then again Ocean Grey applied to bring everything together.  The effect at the moment is still a little start however this will be subdued when the green camouflage goes on top.  Any stark grey areas will be address after this point.

More progress on the Spitfire Mk.VIII.

Topside camouflage went on like a dream then it was time for some chipping.  Water brushed onto areas around the engine, gun bays and inboard wing areas and left to soak for 2-3 minutes.  A cocktail stick then used to chip away the paint.  This was also done on the prop spinner dome and on the prop blades.

That’s a great kit and you’re off to a quick start!  The chipping looks good around the wing root.

Thanks for that.  It’s a fun kit to build with great detail.  Am very happy with the chipping given it’s my first attempt using the hair spray technique.

I want to buy this toy, can you please help me from where i can get this toy. I was just searching about australianwritings.com.au/ in google. Over there my son saw your photo and clicked on it. Now, he is crying and asking for this toy. Can you please help me, i would be so glad. Please.

Firstly you need to be aware, this is not a toy.  This is a scale model kit built from many parts and requires an amount of skill to build it.  The Kit requires glue, paints and finishing products which are not included in the box.  The processes I have used for this build have been learnt over many years like many other modellers on the this forum.

The kit is available online at BNA Model World but is currently on a pre-order basis: https://www.bnamodelworld.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=0&zenid=5f48bb2769cbfb78ff8cdb691311ac16&keyword=Spitfire+Mk.VIII

Check Ebay or other Australian based model retailers.
