F-4 SEA camo with black undersurfaces

Recommended Posts

I just checked my Squadron Signal "Phantom in Action". It contains a painted profile of "Terrible Tyke", F-4D,  #66-279, of 497th TFSQ "Night Owls" with black undersides.

Gloss black bellies ?  Why....

During WWII, gloss black was found to be less visible under spot lights than flat black. The gloss paint scatters the light. Flat black doesn't and makes the aircraft more visible under a spot light.

Technically I think the aircraft would be over a spotlight......  😎
