bentwaters81tfw
Hi Guys, Can anyone tell me why USAF F-104s had white painted wings, when the rest of the airframe was NMF? Also was this fleet wide, as I am sure I have seen all NMF airframes? TIA Frank
Petarvu
Will you be surprised if I tell you bottom of wings was aircraft grey? Edit. Why? I have no idea... Cheers P Edited January 20, 2019 by Petarvu

Geoff M
here is a previous post with the same question and the various hypotheses. Geoff
bentwaters81tfw
Most interesting, and thank you. I plan to model an F-104A, which is supposedly NMF all over. I will speak with Maj Al Brown, who flew the modified 'A' model that was supplied to Taiwan. Apparently the J79 was tweaked to give increased performance. He said nothing would touch it in it's day. There were 26 hot-roded F-104A/B's with the uprated J79-GE-19 engine installed. These were used by the 319th FIS out of Homestead AFB, Florida. Just be aware that these -19 equipped F-104A/B aircraft were painted in overall ADC grey for most, if not their entire service, with this engine in the 319th. They also didn't receive the M61 gattling gun until being modified to use the -19 power. Most BMF finished F-104A aircraft from the 319th FIS will likely have the -3B engine and the gun port faired over. Cheers, John
