Don’t blame Sprue Brothers....

True, any tax is more work for the companies. Only good thing, Sprue brothers does not have to deal with Canadas ridiculous taxes on top of a tax..

Realistically, they’re just being forced to police the tax laws we never followed. Almost all states have laws that obligate you to report total of out of state purchases for the year and pay sales tax. In like manner, many states allow you to file claims to return their sales tax if you’re out of state and paid sales tax on a purchase.

No no one ever did any of this and it is impossible to enforce on an individual level, so they’re turning to the businesses to do so. Meanwhile, we were supposed to be laying these taxes all along.

American taxes are more than enough to drive most sane person crazy.

If you live/order online in the same state as the vendor you usually get charged local sales tax. This is what I have to do with companies like Squadron and Caracal because we are all in Texas.

If you live/order online in a different state as the vendor then it is usually up to the laws of the state where you live, not the laws of the state where the vendor is.  Example, amazon.com of Seattle WA did not initially charge sales tax in Texas. The state of Texas made the case that, since Amazon had a warehouse in Texas then Amazon was considered a Texas company and had to charge sales tax.

What a mess this will be if they institute it nationwide.

There are not just 50 state sales tax amounts, there are more than 10,000 since counties and municipalities can charge different rates.

This will help kill small businesses...

We have 25% value added tax on just about everything here in Norway, and you get used to it eventually. But seeing how many states in the US have low or no VAT I understand that this may be frustrating.

On the other hand, the VAT do support public services, which has to be paid somehow. So it's all part of the price of funding the infrastructure of our society.

Wow!  I thought 13% was nuts. 25% is insane.

Well, not 50. No sales tax in Montana. Just to be sure I ran a purchase through to entering payment info and sure enough-no tax.

Gee, I guess that's the end of Sprue Bros.  If local brick and mortar stores have to collect taxes why should big E-tailers get a pass? Who will get the tax revenue? The place where the business is at or should they send the revenue back to the state the purchaser is in?  Ultimately it doesn't matter because the way things are going in 20 years 80% of the population will probably be working in some sort of warehouse anyway. The Boston warehouse will send socks to the Amarillo warehouse where they will in turn send the Seattle warehouse shirts and they will send.. etc...
