Brad-M
Ok, were Mig-15's NMF, or NMF with a protective coating? Just wondering if a model of a Mig-15 that was NMF would have showed different shaded panels or not. TIA Brad
Helmsman
IIRC it was a clear laquer with aluminum powder. We had few MiG-17s in training unit, all had more or less uniform finish besides usual weathering.

All the different panels were visible as separate colours as well as all the rivets. I mean all rivets!!! Only very few parts which were of traditional iron (like the counter / balance weights on stab tips) were painted with Alu paint (clear varnish with aluminium powder added to it). kotey
From start of produce MiG-15 and then MiG-15bis aicrafts had NMF coating by clear-type pentaftale warnish type 170, but this warnish not really resistant to atmospheric conditions, so starting first half of 1951 at one of producer factory were tested new type of warnish - type 9-32, its had more resistent, but after drying it had yellow shade - like old Begemot decals :) , so before covering in its were added 6% of aluminium powder, this type of covering called 9-32Ал and aircraft after this look without panelle effect - boring grey metallic, in second half of 1951 its were staret to use, since 1952 old type of covering not used any more. MiG-17s since first aircrafts hadn't NMF. Edited February 3, 2019 by kotey
ya-gabor
Hi Kotey, This could be true for Russia. In Hungary we still had clear natural metal airframes in late 1950's (even after general overhaul) and early 1960's! Best regards Gabor
Flankerman
So.... as is usual for these types of colour conundrums, the answer is......... They were ALWAYS clear laquer-coated NMF............ EXCEPT when they weren't..... Ken
