Hello friends,

Huey specialist I need your help ... Ray are you there?

I have in my stash a kit of the 1/35 Seminar UH-1C. As everyone knows, Seminar did not do his homework well and this kit is unusable to represent a C

The rotor of the kit is a UH-1B rotor and although a new vertical stabilizer with wide chord is provided in the kit, it does not have the cambered profile of the UH-1C.

Of course, I will not throw this kit in the trash bin but I plan to to convert it to a UH-1A ambulance in 1962 in Vietnam

I already know that it will be necessary to modify :

Use the empennage of the UH-1B fortunately still present on the sprues of the kit

Shorten the length of the main rotor mast

Reduce the chord of the main rotor blades (15 in)

Correct the length of the blades to respect the diameter of the rotor (43ft 9in)

Move the counterweights under the rotor head at the axis of the rotor blades

Redo the weights on the stabilizer bar different on an A

Ammo falls exited forward fuselage instead of the rear like B and C models

Install the pitot tube on the nose

Install FM antennas on the nose

Install unarmored seats

Scratch build stretcher and medical equipment

The fuel tank cap is already engraved on the right side of the fuselage

What have I forgot?

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated

thank you in advance

Patrick

sounds like you are going to be busy for a while. Ray is the man with all the answers regarding hueys. please post photos in progress.

Patrick, here are a few more details:

  • The B model rotor has more "pre-coning" than the A model. You'll have to reduce the angle of the hub
  • There is only one windshield wiper on the right (pilot's) side
  • The right lower aft compartment door (just in front of the tailboom) is louvered
  •  The VHF/UHF "Collins" antenna (over the cockpit), and the FM whip antenna (on top of the vertical stabilizer) may or may not be present; check your sources for the one you're builiding
  •  The fuselage navigation lights above and below the cabin are single bulb teardrop type lights
  •  There is a UHF antenna on the top of the engine cowling, just in front of the rotating beacon
  •  I'm not familiar with the seminar kit, but if it has the C model vertical fin, you'll have to recontour it and add the tail light fairing on the trailing edge

Hope this helps.

Hi Oliver,
I hope you're patient Because it's just a future project. Before starting this UH-1A I have a lot of shelf queen to finish ........

Hi Mig,Thank you for these informations, they will be very useful to me the day I will start to build this model.
For the vertical fin, no problem. both are in the kit, B and C
Thanks again for your helpPatrick

I made a UH-1A using a Seminar UH-1B kit. Some fitting issues with the interior but you can get to an A model with it. Cut short the rotor mast, change the balance weights to the drop down type and change the details of the stabilizer bar and the exterior is more like an A. Inside, the pilot seats are different. Not hard to scratch build.

Hello Chris,

OOOOOOOOOOh,so you have already done this conversion?!, Very interesting!

Have you published an article on the forum, and if so do you have a link? I will be very interested to see pictures of your work.

I agree with you, the Seminar seats are ridiculous and had to be rebuilt in scratch.

The conversion seems feasible but four points worry me:
  • The rotor head

To reduce the "pre-coning" I see no other way than incise the hub and reduce the angle but I'm afraid of weakening the rotor head and it can no longer resist to the weight of blades

  •     The blades of the main rotor.

Except error on my part, on the UH-1A, the chord of the blades is 15 in or, 30.1 cm = 1.08 cm in 1/35 ...... the blades of the kit have a chord of 18.2mm !

if I reduce the blades of the kit I will lose all the reinforcements engraved on the blades and I do not know how to reproduce them.

  •     The right lower aft compartment door (just in front of the tailboom) is louvered

How to reproduce these slots? In 1:35 you can not just engraved them, you have to really open the slots and cross the fuselage, how did you reproduce that?

  •     The seats

Their shape seems easy to reproduce but I have no dimension and I'm afraid to be wrong in simply estimating their size after a photo

I am very interested to know what solutions you have found to these problems
In advance, thank you for your help
Patrick

PS : Sorry for my poor English, I hope you can understand me................
