jimharley
Hi all, thought you guys might get a kick out of this build. I quit modelling nearly 30 years ago...life, girls, work...etc.. I got the itch after attending an IPMS show at Port Clinton Ohio last summer. I dug my Williams Brothers Laird out of my stash and got to work. I started with buying some acrylic Vallejo paints and the primer, along with a new airbrush. After getting it all framed up I shot it with the primer and it went on great. There were a few dust specs that needed sanded and I went after them with wet 400 grit paper...well the primer came off in sheets. Discouraged by that I went back to Testors enamel and got a much more satisfying result. I've since given acrylics another try and I really like them...just part of the learning curve. I'm working on the Gee Bee Z now and it is nearly completed. These photos are kind of the highlights from the Laird. More soon. jimharley
Further progress...I added quite a bit to the cockpit but unfortunately you really can't see much of it. It builds really nice although it has some issues that required filling around the lower fuselage and wing. I have to say they really did a nice job of getting the proportions right. I chose the pre-Thompson scheme in which Doolittle set the cross country record between Burbank and New Jersey. I may do the Thompson scheme at some point with all the trim. IMG_1020 (1) by jim harley, on Flickr I used a combination of pastels and airbrushing to simulate the exhaust trails from the long cross country dash. jimharley
More of the finished build. I really like these kits...for me, they are the perfect scale for this era. Aeronca1121
Columbus Show this weekend. Have a beer?
dnl42
Nice! It's fun to see Golden Age aircraft here--makes for quite a colorful display. I love this color scheme. Looks like the Arc en Ciel (nee Hawk) 1/48 Laird Solution just has the Thompson scheme...

Yeah you bet 🙂 I may bring the Laird and the Gee Bee...just have to find a good way to transport them. See you there!

I wanted to portray the Laird as it would have looked after Doolittle landed from the Bendix. I will probably do another in the Thompson scheme at some point. This is by far my favorite era, I just wish there were more kits available. A 1/32nd Pete, Ike, Mike, and quite a few others would really be cool to model.
