hawkwrench
With all the talk and rave over KH's new MH-60L in Somalia markings, I wanted to post a separate thread on this topic. Hopefully we can get it pinned. I received permission to post this new pic showing the flight crew of Super 66. Take a good look at their flight vests. hawkwrench
This is the flight helmets they wore. This top pic is from the US Army Aviation museum. Tim
HeavyArty
Helmets are SPH-4s. Your vest pic doesn't show, but I believe the aircrews also wore Ranger Body Armor (RBA).
hawkwrench
I'll have to ask my aircrew source, but I seem to remember them saying the armor plates slid into the front and back of the aircrew vests. EDIT: I just spoke to my source, and the vests had the armor inside them. Tim Edited April 7, 2019 by hawkwrench
hawkwrench
I received permission from a 160th pilot to post these 2 pics of a little bird pilot and his flight gear. Tim
GMK
The Ranger Body Armor plates were an interesting shape.
11bee
If I recall correctly, that notch was to allow the wearer to get a good fit with the buttstock of his weapon. I think they are reintroducing this on the latest plates just being issued.

Sarathi S.
Correct, they've been doing that with SAPI plates and newer. Certain cuts of ballistic plate make the cut more aggressive for weight savings and less obstruction of the shoulder as well.
DarkKnight
most common pistols? Beretta? SIG? MP5?
hawkwrench
Beretta 92's. Some aircrews carried mp5's while others carried variants of the M16. Tim

Weird the small things that stick out when you're a shooter. Then again they were introduced to the regiment in 1991 and like anything else you gotta crawl before you can walk. The first issue of the PS-390 didnt have a back plate.
