IrishGreek
I have a 1/48th boxing of a JASDF F-104DJ and I am wondering can you convert this kit to a NATO 2 seater? I am not super up on all the differences in the F-104, so any thoughts appreciated. Thanks
Dave Williams
Depends on which nation’s twin seaters you want to do. The main difference is in the seats, gear doors, and wheels. The DJ has Lockheed seats, narrow wheels, and flat gear doors. Many, but not all, NATO TF-104Gs have Martin Baker seats, wide wheels, and bulged MLG doors. IrishGreek
Seems like the bulged doors is probably the biggest hurdle. Sure you can get the resin seats, maybe the tires... but doors? Thanks Dave.
phantom
You can make the F-104DJ into a CF-104D (therefore NATO) out of the box.

I believe both the narrow and wide tires are on the same sprue in all of the Hasegawa 1/48 kits, but the seats and bulged gear doors are not.
IrishGreek
@phantom and @Dave Williams, thank you for the help and your responses. So, to do a Northern neighbor, OOB. That sounds nice. And great to know what I would need to do one from over the pond. Thank you again, John
Winnie
Norway had CF-104D's. In fact one is in flying condition now look up www.starfighter.no for more info
IrishGreek
@Winnie Thanks. I spent some time looking at stuff online about the Norwegian 104s after seeing your post. They still have quite a few on display around the country. Pretty cool. Plus that D that was just made airworthy too! What is that color green on them, do you know? Winnie
Originally the same color green as the Canadian Starfighters, later some color they found in a paint store in town... no lies!
Dave Williams
Look closely at CF-104Ds flown by Norway and Denmark. Photos show them fitted with MB seats, which means that the original Lockheed seats were replaced.
IrishGreek
@Dave Williams, I see that. Thanks for that heads up. I also re-checked some Google images of Canadian ones and it looks like they retained the C2 seats. @Winnie The paint store. That is funny!
