so what's most popular models these days?

Recommended Posts

Are you asking what aircraft models are popular or kits in general? Because I'd have to say the Gundam kits are becoming pretty popular generally speaking. I was in a shop the other day just outside of D.C. and they had three aisles of Gundam kits, and about half an aisle of aircraft kits.

Those and the Star Wars stuff has taken over the Hobby Town in Richmond.

Very subjective and you'll never get a real answer....just opinions. First two subjects thrown out there? Tamiya F-14 and any Bf-109......I couldn't care less about both. What's popular or favored among one group, is disliked and discounted by another. Enjoy what YOU like about the hobby and don't worry about what others like or dislike.

I’d argue that you can still spot trends...

x2 35th Zulu Cobra sheets?  Hmmm

Brookhurst Hobbies in Garden Grove had a stack of Tamiya 14As just after it dropped.  I swear I haven’t seen that many boxes of the same kit in the same space since the 80s

Omaha NATS.  Everybody had a Meng F-35 under one arm and an Eduard Bf under the other.

Abrams.  It’s the Bf/51/Spit of of the Armored world.

Something else that really on fire 50 years after?  Moon landing.  Mercury Redstone Atlas Gemini Titan Apollo Saturn LEM is all coming out of the woodwork.

You see multiple companies doing the same subject...That’s not Socialism (everyone gets the same thing), that’s capitalism at its popularism best.

Any threads that starts with “What subject would you like to see a new tool kit of?”  You’ll get 51 responses with 68 different subjects (always a cadre that expects instructions are for others and list multiple subjects)....Unpopular, unpopular unpopular x66.  If it had any shred of possibility of being at least liked...yup, somebody would tool it.

Last hint.  Any thread that has a post “why’d they tool that, we have so many already!  We really needed a whatever.”  Yup, you guessed it again .. the whatever is joykill.  The subject we have too many off, wait for it...popular.

It's a new kit that did extremely well upon its release (Academy sold out the entire first run and many retailers sold out within hours of receiving their kits). Hell, I won't get my sheets back from Microscale until the end of June and I've already sold 75% of the print run! While it is doing very well, I still wouldn't put it in the "most popular" category. It's popular among those that build modern military subjects, but not with all modelers across the board.

If you mean of all time, that's very difficult to say as most manufacturers don't say how many kits have sold.  I know Trumpeter sold a lot of 1/32 A-10s and was one of their more successful releases, but it's not THAT popular.

If you want an idea of what's popular right now, a helpful tool is available at scalemates.com:

In 1/72 scale, those AMK Kfir kits vanished like a fart in the wind after they were released. You can't find any more on Ebay for less than $50, they first sold for about $20.
