Don't know, I always buy the brass replacements if I can get them, they seem nice and rigid so I dont worry about them breaking, white metal will often bend before breaking, its my second choice, but keep in mind i havent completed a kit for years

Here is a closer look at the decal options in the new kit. As far as I know they have not been in any previous releases by Eduard. (What would be the idea about redoing a decal which already has been in production???)

The Hungarian Capeti 1904 is interesting in a way. There have been decals of this plane by different companies. The only problem is that the actual 1904 aircraft was repainted about 5-6 times to its present condition as it is in a museum. Every time the design was changed in many way with different additional "ideas" by the painters during "restoration". Military have a strange love to see everything repainted, then it will look so orderly and so military but they dont really care about authenticity. 

 

I am sure that many people will come forward saying that they have photos where the shark mouth is different, the gills are in a different place, or will be asking about the absence of some extra squadron markings or the external fuel tanks with shark mouth. . .   Yes, there are other versions of this plane with all those extras but it was not possible to include everything on this decal sheet since then most of it would have dealt with all the different paint versions of this Hungarian plane. The point of this kit was not this!

This is why we have chosen to make the original 1904 Capeti scheme as it was on its introduction in 1992. The plane flew about one year with this marking before it was completely repainted for visit to Fairford 1993. So if you were there and took photos it would have been of a different scheme just as the one visible today in the museum!

This is as it looked on that weekend in August 1992 and without the Camel signs for the rest of the year.

Thanks for the additional info.   I asked about 'repeats' because they have occasionally done it on some of their other Mig-21 releases.

I have no idea about the other schemes, my work was only on the Hungarian one. I take all responsibility for this one only.

 

Have no idea where the others came from, although I have seen photos of that Russian one somewhere.

 

At the weekend will try out the decal and see how it works.

The resin parts are the same as with the Brassin wheel set. Unfortunately the wheels are not weighed and they lack the holes designed for measuring the wear and tear in use. A nose leg U shaped part is provided. While it looks very nice, it is from resin and so thin that one can actually see through it. I am not convinced at all that it will not snap at the first opportunity that weight is placed on it. Will leave it out on my build. The extra set of antennas is applicable only for the Croat AF version.

The photoetch set is basically the same as the one provided originally but with a difference. Although it is not a kind of LööK instrument panel as produced for prop fighters by Eduard but the new thing is that on each instrument face a drop of varnish was added. It is OK-ish but if you want to nit-pick the actual instrument faces are a piece of completely flat glass. The same applies for WW2 fighters and to all LööK instrument panels.

The decal sheet. I was not certain that the printers will be able to produce the unique stencils for the Hungarian fighter, but it turned out perfect, legible and as it should be. Small reminder here, when the plane was repainted there were no painting stencils available at the workshop so as a quick solution most of the stencils on the camouflaged 1904 aircraft were covered up with masking tape. On went the yellow overall colour, down came the masking tapes and you had the white stencils on a camo background rectangle of different sizes. This is the first time that this stencilling was reproduced for this aircraft (it could be for any for that matter).

 

Small note: The same “stencil” technique was used on many other aircraft during the period when WarPac states changed from natural metal/overall grey  to the camouflage.

As alternative to the photoetch for those who dont like to work with brass the kit also has a choice of decals for intrument panels. Here you have only the instruments so the previous problem is avoided where the background blue-green cockpit colour was also printed on the decal. Back then everyone was trying to match the colour on the decal to the paint they used for the rest of the cockpit. Now you can use which ever cockpit colour you want / paint you have and it will be a perfect match together with all the fine decal instrument details.

I was sure that actually are two yellow 1904 in Hungary?! That plane was every time on Kecskemet air show.... and every time with new coat of paint 😉 Probably they like to paint 😎 

 

PS: OT any info about Air show in Hungary in 2020?

The military are stupid and they like everything re-painted as many times as possible. If it was up to them then they would repaint Mona Lisa every year. Remember that Italian lady making/re-painting a Church Christ painting look like a Monchichi? And she is proud of it to this day!

 

That’s what our military are doing, re-paint it and it will look so nice, orderly and very military. Simply Stupid!!!!  At the Szolnok museum every and all aircraft were repainted into dubious colours from the phantasy of the lead painter man (and the paints he had on hand). They could not even copy properly squadron markings even if originally it was there on the aircraft to make records of it. Wrong marking and even managed to put it in a wrong place. All the Natural Metal aircraft are painted now in a grey scheme (this was one of the favourite paints of the painter). Of course there was also a possibility to charge for all the painting work, the museum was made from EU money, so  . . . they painted as many as they could, that is all!

 

So I am not surprised that you thought that there are several 1904’s around. Really sad. This is one of the reasons why I preferred the original very first scheme fro Capeti 1904 with which 1904 did actually fly for a year in a front line squadron.

Ehehehhe but I am really impressed with HU army level of repainting.... in Croatia they really dont care....but some examples are preserved so it would be OK.... bad paint work is better than cutting into pieces, for sure! 

 

Some enthusiast saved one example from devastating (repainting in wrong colors, ex People Army of Yu airplane, in which croatian pilot deflected) so we can expect better days and some good example how to preserve historical pieces.

Perhaps as wet transfers. They’ve done that with a few of the limited edition kits from Eduard recently.

I know HGW are working on the brand new Mustang decal to go with the new Edu kit. As far as the MiG Limited goes I am not sure if it would be a viable choice by them.

Surely of the Mustang decal they can sell as much as they want.

The manufacturer is selling you a product and should have some responsibility for its quality (not only of the plastic) but also of its research including the decal. I know it is very difficult to coordinate with specialists of given countries to get it all right in a very short time. There are all the deadlines and all the other work around (like the Mustang in case of Eduard) so it is not easy.

I know that this is the first time that I am happy with what they did for the Hungarian version but believe me there is a lot of work behind that. And this is the first time that things worked out well. There were all the bad mistakes with original MiG-21bis kit, the MiG-15 they did, last year the complete disaster L-39 decal and earlier this year the Me-109 G-10. I was in one way or another involved in all (apart from the Me-109) so with this decal the score is 1 : 4 so there is still place to inprove.

Thank you Gabor and thank you Eduard for this kit and the decal option fo the all yellow Hungarian "Capeti"! One of my long lasting modeling dreams now can become true. I already got the initial Eduard MiG-21bis when it was released, the corrected Coldwar Studios nose section, decals from HAD and Camel decals from a car modeling source. The HAD decals are one of the earlier releases by SZEGEDI Ferenc and not really satisfying by todays quality standards. At this year' s Mosonshow, while having a 1:48 "CAPETI" in mind, I got two sets by Hungarian numbers from HAD, which I have carefully selected to get a pair of sheets in good register. The main problem of HAD decals is, especially with multi colored numbers, that they are out of register sometimes. In 1:144  he released the white and red parts separated. Hopefully he will go this way in the bigger scales too, when they are rereleased sometimes in the future.

 

Back to the yellow MiG-21bis. The reason, that I am so emotional with this special plane is, that I am having many, many nice memories around it. I attended the Repülönap Taszar in August 1992 together with a friend and this is still my favourite airshow of all times! In my life I visited 150+ airshows until now and no one reached this one in terms of aircraft variety, photographic opportunities and hospitality! Although a MiG-29 was missed and not part of the show, there was a great variety of Hungarian AF aircraft and a strong USAFE participation. I became sentimental while seeing my local Spangdahlem and Bitburg AB planes standing side by side with the MiG's and Su-22. But this special all yellow MiG-21bis was my personal star of the show!

 

 I took some shots on Kodachrome 25 film, which was state of the art in slide films until the end of its production in 2008 due to its authentic colour balance. Since yellow is not yellow, the hue on the pictures might be authentic on the shots. The first one shows yellow 1904 "Capeti" entering the runway on the taxitrack

Almost exactly one year before, I visited Taszar Air Base for my fist time. Gladly, the MiG-21bis were operational and 1904 has flown as well, albeit in tactical camouflage colors.

So the onus is on the buyer and not the manufacturer?  So what if someone printed US insignias in purple and pink instead of red and blue?  Or produced a MiG-21 kit in the shape of a 737?  Is the onus on the modeler to make it right?  


How about if you bought a Lexus and you got a Yugo instead?  Is the onus on you to turn it into a Lexus?

Well,  just ordered the MIG-21bis kit today, and also a Harder and Steenbeck Evolution CS airbrush.  Excited for both.  I now understand, per ya-gabor, that this kit is not newly tooled, however, he also said that the 2011 tooling is great stuff!  I'm on an Eduard kick, working now on a Spitfire Mk. VIII,  which has gone really well, so I am impressed with Eduard's stuff, now.  Also have an Eduard P-51D-5 on the way.  So, I'm going cutting edge Eduard!  😋

  The Eduard MiG-21s are great, easy to build kits-  In terms of the build experience, you will not be disappointed!  Here’s my MF attempt.
