Kurt H.
Sometimes I like to take the road less travelled. I am thinking ahead and I want to build the ZM P-51D . I have the Mustang IV kit, it has the parts for a filet or non filet tail. All the decals I find are for very colorful planes with lots of nose art. I would like to build something without lots of colors and checkerboards, and focus on the surface finish. Were all World War II Europe and Pacific mustangs gaudy? Am I looking at post ware ANG markings If I want something subdued? Any thing in 1/32 which would be suitable? Thanks
phantom
This is one of the more colourful Canadian Mustangs, using the Leading Edge sheet in 1/32. Leading Edge has two sheets of even more boring options.
11bee
AIMS has a nice set of Korean War F-51D's. I'm currently building "Little Beast 2"
DDC
What about a factory fresh Mustang? https://www.drawdecal.com/p-51d-mustang/ Seeing these decals availiable, I.might have to procure a Tamiya P51 and have a see what the fuss is about 😄 Edited September 11, 2019 by DDC
Kurt H.
Leading edge does not seem to have 1/32 P-51 sheets any more. 😫 The factory fresh look is a good one. Edited September 15, 2019 by Kurt H.
Andreas Beck
Thank you, DDC!! All the "Old Crows","Passion Wagons" e.a. once came to see daylight in this naked appearance…. Edited September 15, 2019 by Andreas Beck spelling mistake
gocoogs
I've always liked Robin Olds' "Scat VII". Polished metal spinner with a red rudder for a splash of color. (Note that decal sheet shows a filletless tail. This is incorrect). http://fineartofdecals.com/goodies/132-p-51d-decal-sets/ Edited September 15, 2019 by gocoogs

11bee
Wow, I really like Scat VII. Subdued yet classy. Regarding the tail, if it’s a D-5, note that many were retrofitted with the fillet later on so the illustration on the decals could be correct.

The serial on the tail says it's not a D-5. 42-72xxx would be D-20 or D-25 (depending on the last 3 digits).
