Saw "Midway" Tonight

Recommended Posts

While not being a series of movies, there have been some very good ones (both fiction and non-fiction) that have come out over the years that hopefully got people interested in those amazing stories. Unbroken and Hacksaw Ridge were excellent movies about subjects I had never heard of before.

We will be seeing more movies in the future depicting the Japanese in a bad light. Midway (2019) had $24 million in funding from chinese investors.  Unbroken was co-financed by Legendary Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group.

The upcoming Top Gun: Maverick has a scene in the trailer where he wears his old jacket but the Japanese & Taiwanese flags at the back of the jacket ( present in the original movie) are now gone.  Quote (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gun:_Maverick#Production):

Controversy

Shortly after the movie trailer's release, Canadian journalist Mark MacKinnon spotted that Mitchell's leather bomber jacket had been changed from the original movie to omit the Taiwanese and Japanese national flags present on the original, leading to speculation that the change was politically motivated in order to appease the Communist Party of China. The move drew some controversy in the United States, with U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham and Donald Trump Jr. criticizing the alteration.

Top Gun: Maverick's financier is Chinese tech giant Tencent which is affiliated with Paramount Pictures :hmmm:

"'Top Gun' trailer sparks controversy over change to Tom Cruise's jacket". Fox News. MSN. July 23, 2019. ...in one scene Cruise's character dons that classic leather bomber but there was a notable difference. Gone are the patches that once covered the jacket's back: the Taiwanese and Japanese flags are absent. These are nations of course that are enemies of China. They've been replaced with similar colors, but not the original flags. Now some are saying this could be due to Top Gun's financier. Turns out Tencent Pictures, a division of the Chinese internet giant, is underwriting the film and they own part of the production company Skydance that's creating the film with paramount...this is nothing new. The China film administration routinely censors films and as the second biggest film market in the world Hollywood's bent over backwards to comply.

So,  I guess we'll be seeing more of these type of movies.
