Story of Willow Run - Making of B-24

Recommended Posts

This is spectacular. How manufacturing aircraft for was was transformed by America. It would have been a gigantic task to stream in supplies, set up manufacturing processes and keep the quality in check. Some 8600 B-24s were built here. The whole film is worth watching.

There's an often told story in the automotive world that said that Henry Ford built the plant with aircraft production in mind! They actually built B24's faster than many fighter airframes.

He did...the Willow run factory and airport were built with the sole purpose of building the B-24, and he started construction of the facility AFTER he accepted the contract to build the planes. At one time it was rolling out a B-24 every 57 minutes or something. The part that always impresses me is that there were TWO parallel production lines in the building, and both turned 90 degrees at the end on turntables so that the exit would stay in the same county as the start, and the factory wouldn't have to pay taxes to separate counties!!
