CD48160 - 1/48 F-16 "Viper" - The Early Years

Recommended Posts

A very cool F-16B. I probably could do one with regular F-16 decals but the camo down the fuslage? How does it look like allaround?

What is that on the sideway intake, btw?

Now I have the ARII and Tamiya 1/48 kit...i could use a blog or a thread to start with?

What are +/-  to build a F-16 prototype?

I have an aires engine exhaust, not of use of course?

Is there any 101 engine out there 1/48?

Decal layout and subjects look great and I am very excited about this sheet........

Aircal62. Could you share some pics of your build?  I’ve heard others suggest a build like you describe. How difficult was it to blend the different pieces together?

Kursad, I have done some very simple photo editing of the photos provided on the forum thread to determine what is written on the port ventral strake on F-16/F101 #50745.   I have these snipets to show for the F-16/F101:

001.JPG.20a0fe4cff34c1ef3d9c40f59bebfcd1.JPG004.JPG.e4902812f1f1359d1be25a04491764e5.JPG

My initial guess for the top line was: "USAF F-16. F101.", but now I am not sure.  The lower line definitely looks like the Crew Chief name: "TSGT. ?. @#$!@#$@!%$"

I'll keep digging.

I am with you Dutch with the top line.

But your previous post: WARNING HOOK RELEASE" or "DOOR RELEASE."

The real YF-16 design build did not contain a hook?

- I checked out all pictures of that japanese zenmaster that finished his YF-16 (My respect; he managed to get the cockpit frame work painting/shape correct) and left out the Otaki kit completely?

My two cents is that the model looks great but measures the lenght size of the FSD.

The YF-16 is a shorty

Thanks to LtCol(Ret.) Svendsen I now know the text (*) on the F-16/101 strakes - hopefully we will have a similar breakthrough with the CCV as I contact some people who were involved in the project.

YF-16 panel lines: The main body access doors (10x) for maintenance seem not there?

It is hard to tell - the Koku Fan drawings, which seem to be the basis for the color drawing you posted earlier, show the access doors. These drawings seem to be accurate in some respects but I don't think they are flawless.

In the very few photos that show the relevant area of the two prototypes, I can not see any evidence of the maintenance panels.

There is a photo going around of the demo under construction and is clearly visible that the structure follows the panel lines that we all know.

That said, the Hasegawa 1/72 YF-16 panel lines are different and seem to follow those in the three views drawing above.

One more thing about the YF-16s, most of the pictures I have seen at rest, portray them with the leading and trailing edge flaps drooped, this is not the case with production variants.

One more on panel lines - paint can be deceiving.  Or more specifically, photos of painted jets can be misleading.  These are of the F-16XL but illustrate what I'm talking about.

XL during modification - obvious panel lines

2010_F16XL_xx_1267828237_8516.jpg

XL painted - no panel lines?

2010_F16XL_9_1267828237_1854.JPG

Actually, look closely at the glossy blue spine just aft of the refueling receptacle - you can just make out the panel lines that are hidden by the adjacent matt paint on the same panel.

The fourthphoto is the one to which I was referring .

Look closely at the canopy rail, you can see the canopy opening latch/handle sticking up.  This is unique to the YF design, and this handle is painted yellow in pics of the finished YFs - look for a small yellow stripe on the port (only) canopy frame in those pics.

The yellow-painted YF-16 canopy opening latch is given as a decal on the upcoming sheet (see element S4 ) along with a few other structural details that are unique to the prototypes - allow me a day or so until I send the P-51H sheet to the printer and I will elaborate.

@habu2 WOW!  This is a treasure trove of reference photos!  Thank you from all of us! K/r, Dutch

These photos are from the old GDFW/LMTAS Code One website, most links are broken on their old website/pages but if you inspect the html source you can still access the hi-res photos (I'm sneaky that way).  Eric Hehs, editor of the print version of Code One magazine, was a friend of mine. I have a full/complete set of the print editions.  🙂
