CD48160 - 1/48 F-16 "Viper" - The Early Years

Recommended Posts

I wan to build one of the Early YF-16s with the row of flags underneath the cockpit.  So which YF-16 (72-1567/68) or YF-16A (75-0745/50) carried the Israeli flag and when?  After checking the F-16.net website, I can only discern one photo of YF-16 72-1568 circa Sep 80 at the Rome AFB hangar without nosecone that shows the israeli flag replacing the Iranian flag.    K/r, Dutch

According to the caption here from the F-16 In Action book (No. 53, the first one on the F-16), it was aircraft 01568, No. 2 prototype, in July on 1979.

It also looks as if by then the earlier STENCIL seat has been replaced by the ESCAPAC seat here.

Actually since this was the #2 protoype (YF), it had the ESCAPAC from first flight.  The Stencel seat was only used on the Full-Scale Development (FSD) airframes (single-seaters 75-0745 through 75-0750 and two-seaters 75-0751 & 75-0752) before switching again to ACES II for Block 1 full production.

Thanks - it looks like there was a lot of video footage from the 1975 European demo that has been posted to YouTube and such, so I am going through those videos to find out the details of the RF-4.

Lots of interesting early F-16 info out there - this video showing the AIM-7 installation on the YF-16 is very interesting, and provides the best view of the super-weird landing gear door mounted Sparrow setup that was tested for a short time (watch the video at 2:40; turn volume down to protect yourself from the 1970s soundtrack).

The door mounted missiles look very weird. Wonder what kind of pylons they would be? Also, the ejection seat in demo F-16 is different from ejection seat we find in most of the F-16 kits.

Hi, thank you for showing my AFTI/F-16 build here on ARC.
I indeed used some of the Caracal Early F-16 sheet markings on this one. KursadA, your decals took ages to reach me in the peak of the COVID-19 crisis, but I am really thankful to you.

Hope you like the finished model!

May I ask where you found the photo of the intake showing the bumps?

The pic looks to be the same as or similar to a pic I received from Mike Valdez many years ago.  I had a reference page for the AFTI jet on my old habu2.net website that included that pic but that went away a long time ago.  It can still be found on the wayback machine.

edit: the YF-16 CCV had similar inlet bumps but I don't have any pics.  On both aircraft these bumps provide clearance for the actuators for the inlet-mounted canards.

A quick reference note for anyone building the #1 or #2 prototype. I'm currently working to build the #1 jet (01567) and while searching for a good photo of the underside of the prototype jets (to determine if indeed they had no arresting hook), I noticed a slight difference in the blue paint scheme on the bottom, with the aft end of 01567 being rounded, and 01568 being a sharp angle to a point. Somewhat minor, I know, but nonetheless...

This is the correct thread 🙂  I will definitely reprint this sheet, just not that quickly. I think the end of 2022/early 2023 would be a good time for a reprint of this and the NASA F-104 at the same time.

Not sure how "first 4" is defined in this context, but until I see photos of an ACES II in an FSD airframe I'm inclined to stick with the Stencel. Note, among other things:

- There's a comment in that same thread about '752' (the second 2-seater) having the Stencel fitted as late as 1983

- There were only 8 FSD airframes total (6 singles and 2 family models), so if the 2nd two-seater had Stencels then it's safe to deduce the first did also

- Even if "first four" is taken to refer only to the single seaters (i.e. not counting the 2-seaters that had Stencels among the four), that would mean that '749 and '750 had ACES seats

- There's photographic evidence that those later production single-seaters also had Stencels fitted. As an example, these shots of 75-750 - more specifically the ones from 1982 in AFTI configuration, clearly show a Stencel seat:
