JohnEB
Hi, I'm a new member so be gentle... And I have searched the site and didn't find my answer.... I'm thinking of getting the Atlantis re-release of the old Aurora 1/72 DC-9 in Hughes Airwest colors. Anyone have an idea for the closest yellow available in a spray can? Cubs2jets
John, I can't answer about which yellow, but be aware that Atlantis was fooled by the colors on the original box-top painting and has supplied the Hughes Airwest markings in a purple color rather than the correct blue. JohnEB
Thanks, that does complicit matters a bit. While I'm not planning to do an UPMS show contender (though I knew a guy "back in the day" who did a great C-9A build of two kits) but I do want it to look reasonably accurate. Are the TWA decals that come with it better? I know a retired TWA pilot who started out as a DC-9 co-pilot on Midwest milk runs. He told me on some segments they'd cruise at less than 5000 ago because the towns were so close together, sounds like the DC-3 days. Too bad no one makes decals for the Douglas-marked prototype like the small Revell kit had.
kg4kpg
I shopped around but decided to do mine with the supplied TWA decals. I’m no expert but they look good to me. I do wish there was a detail set available for this kit though.
Cubs2jets
Vintage Flyer Decals is the place to turn to. All of their DC-9 decals can be printed in 1/72 to fit the Atlantis/Aurora kit. http://www.vintageflyerdecals.com/dc-9.html I'm sure the instruction will have a good color match suggestion for the yellow. JohnEB
So decals won't be an issue..thanks to those who answered...but what about the color? No sense in paying for correct aftermath decals if I can't get the fuselage color right. 😊
Cubs2jets
I spent some time working on your research on Google I typed in "Hughes Airwest yellow color". The answer seems to be "bright yellow" or "'banana yellow". This is a link to the Draw Decals web page for their Hughes Airwest DC-9 decal. Double click on the illustration and page 2 is painting instructions. https://www.shopdrawdecal.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=72-DC9-44 I also found this build article on Airliners.com: https://www.airlinercafe.com/page.php?id=55 C2j Edited December 7, 2019 by Cubs2jets
Charlie D.
I built one with the Vintage Flyer Hughes decals, they’re great! I used rustoleum 7747830 gloss yellow. Close enough for me and the elderly ex airline mechanic who has it now hanging non his garage loves it.
