Chriss7607
I admit that I don't know a lot about Spitfire marks, but I thought the only real differences between the Mk. VIII and IX is that the VIII had a more pointed rudder and retractable tail wheel. Is that right, or is there more to it? Any help is greatly appreciated!🍻
seawinder
Yes for the retractable tail wheel. Most VIII's had the pointed rudder, but so did any number of late IX's. The other visible point of recognition I'm aware of is the shorter span ailerons on the Mk. VIII: the span was reduced outboard of the hinge points, so the ailerons didn't go all the way to the wing tip section as did those of the Mk. IX.
Cool Hand
Another difference is that the wings of the Mk. VIII have fuel tanks forward of the gear bays.
Chriss7607
Thank you both very much for the replies! That's exactly what I needed to know. It was information I need for a project I've been meaning to do for a while.
Sowar
Mk IX had one downward reco light under the fuselage center line, below the pilot' seat and Mk VIII had this reco light at the mid of rear fuselage and one light under each wing near the wing tip seam.
